Position Summary / Objective:

In support of Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD), this position provides Computer Systems and Software Engineering Support to the Maritime Warfare Control Systems Division (H20) for the development of Maritime Command and Control systems, Warfare/Weapons Control systems, and future warfare development. H20 supports programs and systems such as: Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) Mission Package (MP); Surface Launcher System (SLS); Vertical Launching Systems (VLS); AN/SQQ-89, Undersea Warfare (USW)/Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Combat Systems (USWCS/ASWCS); Aegis Weapons & Fire Control; Autonomous and Unmanned Systems; Electromagnetic Maneuver Warfare (EMW); Information Warfare/Big Data; Machine Learning; and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

 

In this role, the engineer will be responsible for the design, development, deployment, and enhancement of advanced computer systems and software solutions.

 

Essential functions:

  • Design, develop, deploy, review, provide recommendation for enhancement, and implement advanced software and computer systems solutions. 
  • Provide engineering assessment, research, and problem resolution.
  • Establish and maintain baselines (software, models, documentation).
  • Assist with the development and implementation of programmatic documentation including ship and systems specifications, performance specifications, interface control documentation, and design decision documentation.
  • Integrate and verify interfaces across required shipboard systems. 
  • Plan and execute test campaigns: unit, integration, regression, SIL/HIL, lab events, and sea trials; develop test plans, procedures, verification matrices, and data capture strategies.
  • Analyze results and produce test reports with statistically defensible conclusions; drive defect triage and corrective actions to closure.
  • Deliver formal presentations of engineering issues and concerns to other technical leads, program management, and other senior officials on complex issues.
  • Manage risk, schedule, and scope, aligning work to milestones
  • Handle classified materials per policy.

 

Required education and experience:

  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in an engineering, scientific, or technical discipline. 
  • Ten (10) years professional technical experience. 
  • Five (5) years specialized experience performing computer hardware engineering, software design, coding and compilation of code; computer or software requirements management, computer systems or software integration; and utilizing systems engineering software tools. 
  • Specialized experience shall also include demonstrated ability to engineer complex systems with integrated software and hardware solutions. 
  • Experience related to weapons systems or Navy programs and HTML, C/C++, Unix, and Linux. 
  • Specialized experience with development of Real-Time VxWorks Symmetric Multi-Processing (SMP) software. 
  • Expertise related to hardware and software development for Standard Missile (SM)-2, SM-3, SM-6, and Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile (ESSM) missile internal interfaces, such as experience with SM-3 Kill Warhead Data Link (KWDL), SM-3 Missile Test Data (MTD), SM-2/Sm-6 initialization message digital interface, and vertical launch system.

 

Preferred education and experience:

  • A Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in an engineering, scientific, or technical discipline. 

 

Competencies:

  • Ability to work both in a team environment and independently, and often under short, multiple deadlines.
  • Proficiency with Real-Time VxWorks Symmetric Multi-Processing (SMP) software.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Demonstrate strong leadership skills. Project/Program management experience or similar/related experience.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills
  • Demonstrate strong qualitative, analytical and conceptual problem solving and thinking skills.
  • Ability to multi-task, deliver first time quality, and support deliverables for time sensitive tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to be a team player, work well with others (internal and external to the organization) and contribute positively to work/team environment while continually seeking ways to enhance contribution to the team.
  • Ability to apply technical principles, theories, and concepts, in the field of computer systems and software design and analysis.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment integrating various ship systems, with teams of engineers and designers of varying disciplines.

Work authorization/security clearance requirements:

An active DoD Secret security clearance.

Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs.

 

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

The typical workday is eight hours in length. Some flexibility in hours is allowed, with concurrence from the supervisor. Attendance at prescheduled mandatory meetings is required. Must be available during the core work hours as determined by your contract/location and must account for the required number of hours in a pay period to maintain Full-time status.


Telework:

  • Situational telework may be allowed for this position subject to customer requirements / expectations.

 

Travel:

  • Ability to travel CONUS; potential to travel OCONUS
  • Travel up to 10% may be required.
