About the Role:
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Kitchen Commis to join our café kitchen team in Coimbatore. This role is ideal for individuals who are passionate about food, eager to build culinary skills, and capable of maintaining high standards of quality, speed, and cleanliness in a busy café environment.
The Kitchen Commis will assist chefs in preparing café-style dishes such as breakfast items, sandwiches, wraps, salads, beverages accompaniments, and light meals while ensuring that kitchen operations run smoothly during service hours.
This role provides an excellent opportunity for hands-on learning and growth within a professional café kitchen.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Food Preparation:
- Assist chefs with ingredient preparation, including chopping vegetables, slicing meats, grating cheese, and preparing sauces or spreads.
- Prepare basic café menu items such as sandwiches, wraps, salads, toast-based dishes, and light snacks.
- Support the preparation of breakfast dishes and quick-service items.
- Follow standardized recipes and portion sizes to ensure consistency.
- Assist in plating and garnishing dishes according to café presentation standards.
2. Kitchen Setup & Operations:
- Prepare the mise en place before service hours to ensure smooth kitchen operations.
- Ensure workstations are organized, stocked, and ready for service.
- Support chefs during peak service periods to maintain fast and efficient order preparation.
- Assist in operating basic kitchen equipment such as grills, induction cooktops, ovens, and sandwich presses.
3. Hygiene, Food Safety & Cleanliness:
- Maintain strict food safety and hygiene standards as per FSSAI guidelines.
- Ensure proper cleaning and sanitization of work surfaces, utensils, and equipment.
- Follow FIFO (First In, First Out) principles while storing ingredients.
- Ensure refrigerators, freezers, and dry storage areas are properly organized and labeled.
- Dispose of kitchen waste responsibly and maintain cleanliness throughout the shift.
4. Inventory & Stock Assistance:
- Assist with checking and storing incoming kitchen supplies.
- Inform the Head Chef or Kitchen Manager about low stock levels.
- Help in organizing storage areas to maintain efficient inventory management.
- Support in reducing food wastage by following correct portioning and storage practices.
5. Team Collaboration:
- Work closely with chefs, kitchen assistants, and service staff to ensure smooth operations.
- Communicate clearly during service to maintain order accuracy and speed.
- Demonstrate a positive, disciplined, and team-oriented attitude.
- Be open to learning new recipes, cooking techniques, and café menu updates.
Qualifications:
- Diploma or certification in Culinary Arts / Hotel Management preferred.
- 1–4 years of experience in a café, restaurant, bakery, or hotel kitchen.
- Freshers with strong culinary interest may also apply.
Skills & Competencies:
- Basic knowledge of food preparation and cooking techniques.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced café environment.
- Strong attention to cleanliness, hygiene, and food safety.
- Good teamwork and communication skills.
- Willingness to learn and take direction from senior chefs.
- Ability to multitask during busy service hours.
