Kitchell seeks an experienced and dedicated Business Development Director to join our Central California region which includes the Counties of: Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Ventura, Mono, and the San Joaquin Valley counties (Fresno, Kern, Kings, Madera, Merced, Stanislaus, and Tulare) and build a long-term career at one of the most innovative and growth-oriented building companies in the United States.

 

Overview

Based in the Central Coast or Central Valley of California (San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, or Fresno), this role is responsible for leading the early identification, qualification, and development of new business opportunities across the Central California region.  Identify and establish relationships with targeted clients in core market sectors including K-12, Community College, Higher Education, Municipal / Public Works, Essential Services, and Healthcare, with a focus on Owner’s Representative and Construction Management services.   Develop client and project intelligence to inform capture strategies, positioning, and pursuit planning.  Coordinate follow-up activities and manages ongoing relationships with clients, industry partners, and key stakeholders to support successful pursuit outcomes.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Own assigned pursuits from qualification through capture, proposal submission, and interview
  • Convene and lead cross-functional pursuit teams and serve as the primary Kitchell point of contact for targeted clients
  • Collaborate with Regional Executives and VP, Business Development to develop and execute regional BD strategies and annual marketing plans
  • Identify, research, and qualify new business opportunities within targeted markets and geographies
  • Develop and execute capture strategies, including prepositioning plans and stakeholder engagement
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, industry partners, and referral networks
  • Maintain awareness of market trends, client needs, and competitive landscape
  • Support and lead proposal and interview efforts in coordination with Marketing and Operations
  • Utilizes safe work practices and follows directives, policies and procedures to maintain a healthy and safe work environment
  • Represent Kitchell at client meetings, industry events, and networking activities (including occasional evenings/weekends) to support relationship development and business growth
  • Perform additional duties and as assigned

Requirements

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, marketing, construction management or related field is highly preferred
  • 8-12+ years of Business Development experience, including at least 5 years leading capture and pursuit efforts in the architecture, engineering, or construction management industry is required
  • Demonstrated experience with public procurement (RFP/RFQ/PQ processes) is required

 

Knowledge and Skills

  • Expertise in the construction management, architecture, and/or engineering industry is required
  • Ability to identify prospects and develop strategies for targeted opportunities is required
  • Extraordinary presentation, oral and written communication skills are required
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, are required
  • Experience with Deltek Vision or similar CRM/database management systems is preferred
  • Ability to demonstrate competencies in achieving results, teamwork and influence is required
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to initiate, build, and manage effective relationships, are required
  • Spanish language skills are preferred but not required
  • Valid California driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle for eligibility for mileage reimbursement is required

Travel Requirements

Frequent (>50%) day trips and periodic overnight travel throughout the Central Region of California (Coastal: San Luis Obispo to Oxnard, and Valley- Modesto to Bakersfield). Flexibility is required for early/late meetings and off-hour events. Occasional travel for industry-specific events and conferences throughout the State.

 

License and Certifications

A valid driver’s license with an acceptable motor vehicle record, free from suspensions or restrictions is required.

 

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in a general office environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

 

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the position is moderately active and the employee is required to regularly sit, talk, or hear and use hands to finger, feel and handle; frequently stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms; occasionally climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.  Must frequently lift and or move 5 pounds and occasionally lift and or move up to 20 pounds.

The annual base salary range for this role is currently $160,000 - $180,000. The Company’s salary ranges are determined by role, level, location, and alignment with market data. Individual pay is determined through interviews and an assessment of various factors, including job-related skills, relevant education and experience, abilities of the applicant and equity with other team members. The annual base salary range listed here is subject to change at any time, in the Company’s discretion, and does not alter in any way the at-will nature of the employment relationship.
