Data Engineer

Kinsale Insurance is hiring a Data Engineer to join our Technology team. We are looking for individuals who are passionate about technology and working on innovative solutions that drive quality and efficiency. This person will be influential in collaborating with our Data Architects, Data Analysts and Data Ops Manager in developing, testing, and deploying Data pipelines. The candidate should have a strong understanding of data analytics, API development and data governance.

Responsibilities

• Develop, design, construct, test, and maintain efficient and scalable database pipelines that align with business requirements.
• Implement ETL and data conversion, using an industry standard ETL tools.
• Conduct ad-hoc data extraction using tools like DBeaver, SQLDeveloper, PL/SQL etc.
• Conduct complex data analysis and generate comprehensive reports.
• Offer technical support and guidance related to database security, backup and recovery, and troubleshooting.
• Identify and implement strategies to enhance resource efficiencies (people and technologies)
• Develop and configure automated solutions for routine tasks.
• Develop and manage data access APIs that will be interfaced by various services.
• Assist in the development and evolution of our data analytics platform to support our data-driven decision-making process.
• Use Generative AI tools (Github Copilot, ChatGPT, etc.) to assist with code generation, documentation, and learning unfamiliar concepts. Effective at identifying hallucinations.
• Understands usage boundaries for sensitive data and models in AI assisted work; knows when and when not to put different types of data into AI tools.
• Actively incorporate Generative AI into workflows to accelerate development, automate repetitive tasks, and improve productivity across all areas of work.
• Diagnose and address root causes of issues related to database platforms or their integration.
• Monitor system performance and propose improvements to enhance data reliability, efficiency, and quality.
• Maintain and/or create documentation for database support.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, technology, or related field or equivalent experience
• Experience with public cloud database architectures
• Advanced working SQL knowledge and experience working with relational databases and query authoring, creating various objects, etc.
• Proven experience in building processes to support data transformation, data structures, dependency, and workload management.
• Demonstrated experience in implementing database technologies at scale, including transaction processing, analytics, security, logging, and monitoring.
• Strong proficiency in Python.
• Ability to manage and prioritize multiple initiatives.
• Analytical problem-solving abilities, with a focus on identifying and resolving issues in a timely manner while keeping solutions as simple as possible.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Effective collaboration and communication skills.

Preferred Skills

• Experience with Java and Agile practices.
• AWS associate level certification.
• Experience with CI/CD Pipelines for Database releases using tools like Liquibase or Redgate.
• Knowledge of machine learning algorithms and data science tools.
• Familiarity with dimensional modeling, data warehouses, data marts, and data vault methodologies.
• Experience with Qlik Sense or Qlik View BI tools and or Talend
• In-depth working knowledge and administration of structured and unstructured data: RDS; Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL, or SQL Server; DynamoDB and/or MongoDB is a plus.
