SUMMARY
The Adult Education Instructor provides instruction across core subject areas, including math, reading, writing, science, and social studies, as well as college and workforce readiness. This role supports adult learners (age 16 and older) at varying academic levels, helping them build foundational skills and progress toward educational and career goals. Instruction and program delivery align with requirements established by the Adult and Family Literacy Act (AEFLA), the Kansas Board of Regents (KBOR), and Kansas City Kansas Community College (KCKCC).
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Instruction & Student Learning
- Deliver instruction and/or tutoring across GED subject areas, including math, reading, writing, science, social studies, technology, and workforce skills, in alignment with Kansas Board of Regents (KBOR) expectations.
- Utilize a variety of teaching strategies to engage adult learners, incorporating differentiated instruction to address diverse learning styles, abilities, and goals.
- Adapt instruction based on formative and summative assessments to support student progress and successful completion of GED exams.
- Prepare students to achieve educational and workforce outcomes, including employment, job advancement, postsecondary transition, college readiness, and citizenship skills.
Student Support & Advising
- Meet with students during enrollment and at regular intervals (at least every three weeks) to review test scores, set goals, address barriers, and monitor academic progress; document advising sessions appropriately.
- Communicate with absent students via phone or email and maintain accurate records of outreach efforts.
Assessment & Compliance
- Administer required assessments in accordance with KBOR Proficiency Attainment Model (PAM) guidelines.
- Maintain and submit accurate records and documentation for state and federal reporting requirements in a timely manner.
- Utilize the Adult Education Student Information System (AESIS) to track student data and program outcomes.
Professional Development & Collaboration
- Participate in professional development activities throughout the academic year to enhance instructional quality and maintain required certifications.
- Collaborate with adult education staff within and outside the College to support program goals and student success.
General Expectations
- Maintain strong instructional skills in math and English.
- Demonstrate effective interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director or Director.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Ability to create and implement lesson plans.
- Ability to create and maintain a student-centered classroom.
- Ability to demonstrate classroom management skills.
- Ability to work with multi-level adult learners.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office software, online resources, and classroom technology
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in education, adult education, or related field.
- Experience teaching basic academic skill areas, including reading, writing, and mathematics, with the application of individualized learning methodologies.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Master’s or higher degree in education, adult education, or related field.
- Teaching experience, especially K-12.
- Coaching and instructing Adult Education/Adult Learners.
- Experience teaching high school equivalency skills to adult learners, preferably GED® preparation.
WORKING CONDITIONS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, talk, hear, walk, and sit. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift items.
WORK SCHEDULE
Anticipated hours Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., 40 hours per week/may require some flexibility based on facility schedule.
