Jewellery designers create original designs for rings, necklaces, earrings, bracelets, and other wearable art. They balance aesthetics, wearability, and manufacturing constraints to turn concepts into pieces people actually want to buy and wear.Core ResponsibilitiesConcept & Design: Research trends, sketch ideas by hand or in CAD like Rhino, MatrixGold, or ZBrush. Develop mood boards and collections based on seasons, brand identity, or client briefs.Technical Development: Create detailed technical drawings with dimensions, stone specs, and metal weights. Select materials: gold, silver, platinum, gemstones, diamonds, enamel, etc.Prototyping: Make wax models, 3D prints, or hand-fabricated samples. Work with model makers and CAD/CAM specialists to refine prototypes.Production Coordination: Collaborate with bench jewellers, casters, setters, and polishers. Approve production samples and ensure quality matches design intent.Client Work: For custom pieces, meet clients, interpret their ideas, present renders, and revise designs based on feedback and budget.Trend & Market Research: Track fashion shows, competitor collections, gemstone markets, and cultural shifts. Price designs based on material cost, labor, and brand positioning.Brand Tasks: Prepare line sheets, photograph pieces, update portfolios. For smaller studios, you might also handle social media, vendor sourcing, or basic merchandising.Key SkillsCreative: Strong sense of proportion, color, form, and current trends. Ability to sketch quickly and think in 3D.Technical: Proficiency in CAD software, knowledge of metallurgy, stone setting types, casting, and manufacturing limits. Understanding of weight, durability, and comfort.Practical: Hand rendering, basic bench skills like sawing and filing, or wax carving are big pluses even if you specialize in CAD.Business: Cost estimation, time management, client communication. In luxury houses, knowledge of hallmarking and certification standards.QualificationsEducation: Diploma or Bachelor's in Jewellery Design, Fine Arts, or Industrial Design. NIFT, GIA, or IGI certifications help, especially in India.Portfolio: Original designs showing both creativity and technical specs. Range matters: fine jewellery, fashion/costume, and bridal.Experience: Entry level roles often start as CAD designers or design assistants. Senior designers lead collections and manage teams.Work Environment & SalaryWhere: Jewellery brands, export houses, retail chains like Tanishq/Tiffany, independent studios, or freelance. Mumbai has many export and manufacturing houses.Hours: Typically 9-6 in corporate settings, but deadlines before launches or wedding season can mean longer hours.Salary in India: Entry 3-5 LPA, mid-level 6-12 LPA, senior designers/brand heads 15+ LPA. Freelance custom designers charge per project or percentage of piece cost.
