Healthcare Technology Innovation Centre (HTIC) is a multi-disciplinary R&D center established through a partnership between the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) and the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India. Role Description
HTIC is seeking a Junior Mechanical Design Engineer with a strong foundation in mechanical design, simulation, and UAV/drone systems. The engineer will support the design, analysis, and validation of mechanical subsystems for compact aerial platforms, mechatronic assemblies, and research prototypes. The role involves hands-on CAD, simulation-led design decisions, and close collaboration with electronics, embedded, and systems teams.This is an on-site position located in Chennai, India.
Qualifications
- A background in Mechanical Engineering with expertise in Design Engineering and Machine Design
- Proficiency in Product Design and Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software
- Ability to analyse and solve engineering problems in a collaborative environment
- Strong attention to detail and an aptitude for innovative and practical problem-solving
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
- Effective communication and teamwork skills
- Hands-on experience with simulation tools for Structural FEA (static, modal, fatigue), Thermal analysis and basic CFD (airflow, cooling, drag)
- Understanding of UAV/drone mechanical architectures, including frames, mounts, and propulsion layouts
- Knowledge of materials (aluminium alloys, composites, polymers, 3D-printed materials)
- Familiarity with DFM/DFA principles
- Ability to interpret simulation results and translate them into design improvements
Preferred / Good-to-Have Skills
- Experience with multirotor or fixed-wing drone design projects
- Exposure to vibration, shock, and dynamic loading analysis
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes (CNC machining, sheet metal, injection molding, additive manufacturing)
- Basic understanding of aerodynamics and propeller–airframe interactions
- Experience working with rapid prototyping and testing setups
