The Opportunity
The Zoo is looking for a passionate, people-first leader to join our Education team as Volunteer Engagement Supervisor.
Our volunteer program is about mobilizing a community. Every year, our volunteers and interns serve guests, support animal care and bring our mission to life across every corner of the zoo You'll lead the effort to recruit, inspire, and deploy year-round adult and teen volunteers, short-term service groups, special event teams, and interns completing 6- to 12-week rotations in every department. Reports to: Director of Learning and Conservation Engagement

What You'll Do
Lead & Develop Your Team Supervise volunteer engagement coordinators, set clear goals, provide ongoing feedback, and foster a high-performing team culture. Actively participate in leadership meetings and initiatives.
Manage the Volunteer Program Oversee all aspects of volunteer recruitment, onboarding, training, and deployment, both individually and in groups ranging from 10 to 100+ participants. Coordinate long-term placements, short-term service projects, and intern rotations year-round.
Drive Engagement & Retention Motivate and inspire unpaid staff through recognition programs and ongoing support, maintaining a positive and inclusive environment that keeps volunteers coming back.
Report & Analyze Track volunteer hours and program metrics using management software. Generate reports to evaluate effectiveness and identify opportunities for improvement.
Develop Policies & Ensure Compliance Partner with People and Culture to develop, revise, and implement volunteer program policies that align with organizational goals and legal requirements. Conduct periodic audits and ensure adherence to federal, state, and local regulations.
Maintain Safety Identify safety hazards within exhibit areas, report issues promptly, and enforce organizational safety protocols to protect guests, staff, and animals.
 
What You Bring
Skills & Abilities
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, applicant tracking systems, and volunteer management software
  • Excellent public speaking and presentation skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Build strong relationships and partnerships with internal and external stakeholders to achieve shared goals.
  • Foster collaboration, empowerment and lead change through effective communications.
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Management, or equivalent
  • 2+ years of experience in volunteer program management, HR, or a related field
  • 3+ years of team management experience
  • 2+ years of experience in community outreach and recruitment through schools, corporations, or online platforms
  • Demonstrated ability to manage large-scale group efforts (10–100+ participants)
Desired Experience
  • 3+ years of volunteer management in a zoo or aquarium setting
Desired Certifications
  • CPR & First Aid Certification
  • SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, or similar HR certification
  • SHRM Talent Acquisition Specialty Credential
Additional Requirements
  • Flexible availability including evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record (must be 18+ to operate organizational vehicles)
  • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds and work outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Local and occasional international travel may be required
