About the role

About the Department

An employee in this position sorts and delivers books, library materials, small equipment, documents, and bank deposits between libraries within the regional system, and performs related work as apparent or assigned.  The majority of the work is performed driving a library vehicle in accordance Jackson County policies, guidelines, and procedures.  Work is performed under the supervision of the Library Director.  Grade 15

Position Duties

  • Drives, loads, and unloads library vehicle.
  • Drives a scheduled pick-up and delivery route, sometimes entering unattended buildings.
  • Inspects vehicle and vehicle equipment such as lights, signals, mirrors, tires, brakes, and fuel and temperature gauges to ensure vehicle is in proper working condition.  
  • Ensures vehicle has adequate fuel, and is cleaned and washed regularly.
  • Immediately reports any mechanical problems or incidents involving vehicle, materials, or equipment vehicle to supervisor.
  • Immediately reports delays, accidents, violations, or other traffic situations that affect delivery schedule to supervisor. 
  • Obeys traffic laws and follows established traffic and transportation safe practices and procedures.
  • Evaluates weather conditions and recommends cancelling or rescheduling delivery if appropriate.
  • Maintains confidentiality and privacy of protected information.
  • Supports organizational goals and objectives by participating in library system and community collaborations.
  • May be required to perform work assignments concurrently.
  • Responsible for maintaining a safe and secure working environment.
  • Oversees and performs shipping and receiving functions at the Sylva library location.
  • Evening work may be required occasionally.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED required.  
One year of library experience preferred.

Licenses or Certifications:
Possession of a valid, State of North Carolina driver license to operate a motor vehicle. Requirement exists at the time of hire and as a condition of continued employment.  

Other Qualifications

  • Knowledge of safe driving practices.
  • Knowledge of North Carolina traffic laws and regulations.
  • Familiarity with library principles and practices.
  • Familiarity with library circulation, catalog, and Dewey Decimal Classification systems.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in highway safety and vehicle performance.
  • Ability to read and understand maps.
  • Ability to plan and organize work, and handle interruptions.
  • Ability to accurately count money. 
  • Ability to give attention to detail.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
  • Ability to effectively work with diverse populations.
  • Possess good interpersonal skills including tact, courtesy, and discretion.
  • Ability to take direction.
  • Ability to use good judgment.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise initiative.
  • Ability to work well under pressure.
  • Ability to use a variety of library equipment and technology.
  • Ability to effectively use various computer applications.
  • Possess general knowledge of local roads.
  • Possess driving record free of moving violations for the past five years.
