About The Role
To provide specialized support and consultation for students with complex communication needs across the ISD and it's constituent districts. This role focuses on evaluating, implementing, and supporting augmentative and alternative communication systems to ensure students can communicate effectively and reach their full potential.
Qualifications Desired
- Valid Michigan teaching certificate with special education approval or valid License via LARA as a Speech and Language Pathologist
- Demonstrated expertise in AAC evaluation, device selection, and implementation strategies
- Ability to program for and motivate students to develop to their fullest potential in the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains
- Interpersonal skills which promote positive personal relationships with students, parents, staff and community is required
- Willingness to be placed throughout the county and travel to various districts as assigned

Job Description
JOB TITLE: Augmentative/Alternative Communication (AAC) Consultant
DEPARTMENT: Special Education-Ancillary Staff
REPORTS TO: Administrator of Accountability and Program Improvement
WORK LOCATION: County Wide
WORK SCHEDULE: Part time based on school year calendar that varies slightly
by district and possibility of Extended School Year(ESY); Hours vary by assignment
SALARY SCHEDULE: Salary and benefits in accordance with Master Agreement
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Valid Michigan teaching certificate with special education approval or Michigan
professional license in Speech-Language Pathology.
• Demonstrated expertise in AAC evaluation, device selection, and implementation
strategies.
• Ability to program for and motivate students to develop to their fullest potential in
the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains.
• Interpersonal skills that promote positive personal relationships with students,
parents, staff, and community.
• Ability to communicate with all stakeholders in written and oral form.
• Willingness to be placed throughout the county and travel to various districts
depending on assignment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Consultation & Instruction: At the direction of the supervisor, provide individual
and/or group consultation regarding AAC systems. Implement planned activities
that assure optimum learning experiences and communication access for
students.
• Assessment & Support: Assist professional staff in evaluating student needs for
assistive technology and AAC equipment. Provide training and input to staff and
families regarding student performance and AAC program ideas.

• Implementation: Demonstrate ability to consistently implement communication
behavior plans developed by the student’s team. Take direction and feedback
from certified staff to implement specific student plans.
• Professionalism: Demonstrate regular and consistent attendance, punctuality,
and dependability. Maintain professional relationships with students and families
with respect to FERPA and confidentiality.
• Communication: Check ISD email account on a regular basis per the ISD
Employee Handbook. Communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in
writing.
• Professional Development: Attend planning, staffing, and staff development
meetings as directed to learn and implement new techniques and strategies.
General Requirements for All Employees:
• Language & Math: Ability to effectively present information and respond to
questions from administrators, staff, parents, and the public. Basic math skills
required.
• Reasoning: Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions and
deal with problems involving concrete variables in standardized situations.
• Physical Demands: Must be able to stand for extended periods, bend, twist, and
kneel. Must have the physical ability to push/pull heavy objects (such as
wheelchairs) and safely lift students up to 50 pounds, or 100 pounds with
assistance.
• Work Environment: The noise level in the work environment varies. Travel within
the Intermediate School District is required.
