Job Description
The Intermediate Panel Design Engineer designs and documents electrical control panels that support engineering teams working on US-based projects. This role focuses on creating accurate electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and panel layouts using E-CAD tools, while ensuring compliance with relevant electrical standards and codes. The engineer collaborates closely with engineers, fabricators, project managers, and local contractors to deliver reliable, well-documented panel designs that meet functional, safety, and compliance requirements throughout the project lifecycle.
Responsibilities
- Develop detailed electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and panel layout drawings using E-CAD software to support US-based engineering teams.
- Prepare, update, and maintain bills of materials (BOMs) and wiring schedules for control panels and related systems.
- Assist with the selection of electrical components such as breakers, relays, power supplies, and related hardware based on project requirements and applicable standards.
- Engage with local contractors to obtain and compare quotes, verify design intent, oversee panel builds, and validate test systems.
- Support engineers during panel assembly by answering design questions, clarifying documentation, and ensuring accurate implementation of drawings.
- Assist with testing and troubleshooting of panels to resolve design-related issues and improve reliability and performance.
- Maintain accurate documentation, including drawings, BOMs, and specifications, and manage revision control for all design deliverables.
- Collaborate closely with engineers, fabricators, and project managers to ensure designs meet functional, safety, and compliance requirements.
- Update and revise existing drawing sets and documentation as directed by the engineering team to reflect design changes and improvements.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering or an equivalent field.
- Proficiency in E-CAD software for creating electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and panel layouts.
- Working-level familiarity with US electrical equipment standards, codes, and compliance requirements.
- Understanding of electrical engineering fundamentals, including circuit theory and three-phase power.
- Ability to prepare and maintain bills of materials (BOMs) and wiring schedules with a high level of accuracy.
- Experience designing or supporting electrical control panels and panel layouts.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with engineers, fabricators, project managers, and contractors.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining accurate documentation and revision control.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with EPLAN is a plus but not required.
- Experience using AutoCAD or similar E-CAD tools for electrical design is beneficial.
- Background in control panel design and control systems is advantageous.
- Familiarity with sourcing and evaluating electrical components such as breakers, relays, and power supplies.
- Experience working with local contractors or fabrication shops to oversee panel builds and testing.
- Strong problem-solving skills to support testing and troubleshooting activities.
- Ability to interpret and update existing drawing sets and technical documentation.
Work Environment
The Intermediate Panel Design Engineer works in a professional engineering environment that combines office-based design work with close collaboration with fabrication and testing teams. The role involves extensive use of E-CAD tools such as EPLAN and AutoCAD to create and revise electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and panel layouts. The engineer interacts regularly with engineers, project managers, fabricators, and local contractors to review designs, support panel assembly, and participate in testing and troubleshooting activities. Work typically follows standard business hours, with periods of focused design work and documentation, as well as meetings and design reviews to ensure that all panels meet functional, safety, and US compliance requirements. Attire is generally professional and appropriate for an engineering office, with additional safety-related considerations when visiting fabrication or test areas as required.
