The responsibilities of an interior designer can be broken down into four core phases:
1. Conceptualization & Space Planning
- Needs Assessment: Collaborates with clients to determine their lifestyle, functional requirements, budget, and project deadlines.
- Space Planning: Analyzes architectural blueprints and draws layout plans to optimize room flow, traffic circulation, and spatial usability.
2. Design Development & Sourcing
- Material Selection: Chooses durable, aesthetically pleasing, and safe materials for flooring, wall finishes, and custom-built cabinetry.
- Aesthetic Cohesion: Harmonizes the seven key elements of design (space, form, line, light, color, pattern, texture) to evoke specific moods and styles.
- Sourcing: Procures furniture, textiles, fixtures, and decor from vendors, balancing luxury desires with financial constraints.
3. Technical Execution
- Drafting & Layouts: Creates technical drawings, including electrical and plumbing layouts, to guide contractors and tradespeople.
- Building Codes: Ensures all designs align with local building regulations, fire safety standards, and accessibility norms
4. Project Management
- Vendor Coordination: Acts as a liaison between the client, architects, contractors, and specialized artisans.
