The Assistant Director assists the Division Director in planning and directing selected and/or designated research program(s) and assists in the administrative activities of the research division. The incumbent may be asked to coordinate the efforts of research staff personnel, provide guidance and stimulus to the assigned program(s), assist in the professional development and monitoring of staff, and/or provide input to the coaching/mentoring process that might include identification of performance expectations.
Note: Assignment to this position may be on a temporary basis for training and development purposes.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Division Program
Assists in the planning and management of the division’s research program and activities particularly assigned and/or designated research program(s). Assists the Director to seek out important tasks and to initiate and negotiate task orders with sponsors.
Maintains close liaison with selected sponsors during program formulation, task execution, and appraisal of the division’s research efforts. Ensures that selected project leaders and staff members maintain close contact with their sponsors.
Project staffing: recommends assignments of division resources to projects.
Project leadership: leads one or more projects in the assigned area. Guides execution of research program(s), and assists staff members in planning their work. Supervises the work, communicating the sponsor’s prioritization of the research program(s).
Project monitoring: monitors those projects in the assigned area that are not being led personally.
Quality control: ensures deliverables receive proper review; participates in the review.
Staff development: provides staff with opportunities for development; encourages and monitors the professional development of staff members.
Division Administration
Participates in the administration of the division in accordance with the Director’s advice and guidance.
Assists in implementing and ensuring compliance with corporate policies, practices, and procedures affecting center activities.
Participates in the recruiting efforts of professional staff employees and provides recommendations to the Director.
Assists in the performance review process as required by the Division Director.
General
Performs other tasks as assigned.
Minimum Job Qualifications:
Education/Experience:
At minimum, requires BS+10 years of experience or MS+8 years of experience or Ph.D. in a discipline appropriate for the position.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Demonstrated ability to perform independent research
Proven ability to publish findings and present findings orally
Able to present ideas, concepts, and theories orally and in writing
Demonstrated innovative thinking and problem resolution
Able to work in an unstructured environment and/or on more than one project concurrently
Able to interact with government or industry representatives
Travel may be required
U.S. Citizenship is required
Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance is required
Compensation

While it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range, a reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role is $135,562 - $281,806. Individual salary within this range will be commensurate with the incumbent’s experience, unique skills and qualifications, and other relevant factors.
