Job Statement
Performs a wide variety of unskilled and semi-skilled manual work in construction and maintenance depending on department or section assigned. Keeps vehicle stocked and in an orderly, clean condition. Assists crew in completion of assigned work.
Essential Duties
1. Loads, unloads and carries tools, equipment and materials.
2. Operates, under supervision, various types of small equipment including air compressor, tamper, tapping and boring equipment and leak detection instruments when required.
3. Performs meter changes in the field; cleans, repairs and tests meters in the shop, when applicable.
4. Installs natural gas services, mains, and makes PE fusions under direct supervision of Crewleader or other qualified Gas Department employee.
5. Assists in the trimming operations, clearing rights-of-way and operating a bush grinder, when applicable.
7. Anticipates supplies, tools, materials and equipment needs of crew and has them ready when needed.
8. Places cones in roadway to protect personnel and vehicles. Flags traffic as instructed.
9. Stocks truck with water, tools, parts, supplies and equipment.
10. Cleans up tools and job site upon completion of work.
11. Performs all tasks in a safe manner
12. Performs various other duties as assigned based on learned skills and ability.
Job Requirements
Education: High School Graduate or equivalent required.
Experience: Construction and utility work experience preferred. Work experience in outside environment required.
Equipment: Trucks, two-way radio, common hand tools, e.g. hammers, screw drivers, wrenches, etc.
Physical Demands: Strenuous outside work in all types of weather; manual dexterity.
Other: Subject to “on-call” and emergency duty. Must have valid drivers license. Will be required to obtain CDL. Must be able to obtain Operator Qualification certification within 12 months.
The Selected Candidate for this position will be required to successfully pass a WORK KEYS test.
This position is considered a safety sensitive position. All employees in safety sensitive positions are subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
Additional Requirements
Advancement to, and graduation from, the Apprenticeship Program is expected of all Utility Workers. Failure to qualify for the Apprenticeship Program, or to complete the Apprenticeship Program, or to otherwise apply for and be awarded a different position within Huntsville Utilities may result in the termination of a Utility Workers’ employment with Huntsville Utilities.
