Compensation Range: $19/hr - $22/hr commensurate with experience

Overview:

The ANHD Center for Community Leadership (CCL) Organizing Apprenticeship is a transformative, paid 6-month training and career development support program for community members and member leaders who are beginning their work in organizing. Participants in the Organizing Apprenticeship are trained as community organizers in a cohort with fellow organizers across issues areas, deepening their knowledge of organizing and advocacy in New York City. During the program, Apprentices: Work as an apprentice for 20 hours a week for 6 months (January-June) with a $12,800 stipend Gain on-the-ground community organizing experience with an organization Learn foundational organizing skills and principles by participating in the CCL Introductory Course and other trainings and workshops Connect with a cohort of fellow new organizers Get career development support and resources through the ANHD and CCL networks Selected Apprentice Finalists are invited to interview with Host Organizations. You may also be nominated by an organization.

 

Responsibilities:

  • The CCL Apprentice at Housing Works will be deeply embedded in our housing justice organizing team, supporting a campaign that fights for permanent, supportive housing for people living with HIV/AIDS, unhoused individuals, LGBTQ+ communities, and formerly incarcerated people. Their work will be hands-on, relational, and rooted in the lived experiences of those most impacted by housing insecurity.
  • Key Responsibilities:
    • Base Building & Outreach: The apprentice will conduct outreach in Housing Works’ supportive housing sites, drop-in centers, and community spaces to engage residents and clients in organizing efforts. They’ll build relationships, listen to community concerns, and help identify emerging leaders.
    • Leadership Development: They’ll assist in planning and facilitating workshops, teach-ins, and leadership trainings for tenants and community members. These sessions will focus on organizing skills, civic engagement, and policy literacy.
    • Campaign Support: The apprentice will help coordinate actions, legislative visits, and public events tied to our housing justice campaign. This includes preparing materials, mobilizing participants, and documenting outcomes.
    • Coalition Engagement: They’ll represent Housing Works in coalition spaces such as Housing Justice for All, attending meetings, sharing updates, and helping align our campaign with broader movement goals.
    • Administrative & Capacity Support: The apprentice will support organizing logistics—tracking outreach, maintaining contact lists, scheduling meetings, and assisting with communications.
