Houghton Lake Community Schools has approximately 1,100 students and is located in the center of the Lower Peninsula in northern Michigan. Our families enjoy the benefits of living in an area thriving on tourism as most of our district surrounds beautiful Houghton Lake. We have about 100 school of choice students from outside of the district and county. Currently, 17% of our students qualify for special education services.
The District has two preschool classrooms with additional preschools available within the community. There is one PreK-6th grade elementary school, a 7th -12th grade high school and extensive alternative education opportunities. Job Title: Coach JV Girls Basketball
Location: Houghton Lake Jr/Sr High School
Reports to: Athletic Director
Job Summary
Houghton Lake Community Schools is seeking an energetic and organized coach to lead the Girls JV
Basketball program. Responsibilities include running the same offensive and defensive systems as the
varsity team, supporting youth development, and assisting with off-season training. The ideal candidate
will have strong basketball knowledge, build positive relationships with student-athletes, and model core
values on and off the court.

Responsibilities
Provide leadership and instruction for student-athletes in the Houghton Lake Junior High Girls JV
Basketball program, fostering their intellectual, physical, social, and emotional growth.
Set short- and long-term goals for the program using sound coaching and learning principles.
Develop and maintain structured practice schedules that support skill development and team
progress.
Teach basketball fundamentals and promote overall athletic development.
Maintain open, effective communication with players, parents, staff, and administration.
Emphasize academic performance and monitor the academic standing of all student-athletes.
Assist in overseeing the HLCS Girls Basketball program with a focus on the JV level, under the
guidance of the Varsity Coach. Participate in planning, fundraising, youth programming, and off-
season development.
Supervise student-athletes and facilities during all practices, games (home and away), and team
events. Ensure proper use and care of all uniforms and equipment.
Address disciplinary issues on and off the court in accordance with school policies.
Ensure compliance with HLCS, MHSAA, and Highland Conference rules and represent HLCS in a
professional manner.
Perform additional duties as assigned by the Superintendent, Athletic Director, or Junior/Senior High
School Principal.

Qualifications
Required:
A basketball background including playing
and coaching organized basketball is
required. Preference given to those with
college and/or middle school playing,
coaching and/or teaching experience.
Preferred:
Prior high school and/or college playing
experience
Prior coaching experience in sports at any
level
Previous teaching/leadership experiences
