Job Summary:
The Hoquiam School District is seeking committed and student-centered Special Education Teachers to serve in the Extended School Year (ESY) and Summer School program. This position supports the unique academic and behavioral needs of students with disabilities while co-teaching alongside general education staff in a vibrant, inclusive summer learning environment.

Key Responsibilities:
Meaningful Relationships:
- Collaborate with general education teachers to provide inclusive, supportive instruction.
- Build strong connections with students, families, and staff through consistent, respectful communication.
- Communicate regularly with school teams, families, and agencies to support student success.
Engaged Learners:
- Provide targeted instruction in Math and English Language Arts (ELA) aligned to Washington State Learning Standards (WSLS) & IEP Goals.
- Use a variety of teaching techniques to deliver engaging instruction tailored to students’ Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals.
- Implement behavior plans and strategies that support a safe and structured classroom environment.
Adaptive Pathways:
- Differentiate instruction and adapt materials to meet diverse student needs.
Ensure that accommodations and modifications outlined in IEPs are consistently implemented. - Use district-approved tools to create and lead small group instruction based on academic data
Community Connections:
- Assist with student drop-off and pick-up and contribute to a welcoming, community-focused school environment.
- Encourage family involvement and provide clear progress updates to parents/guardians/surrogates.
- Collaborate with a team of educators to ensure smooth operation of the summer school program.
Essential Duties:
- Support ESY students and those with IEPs participating in the general summer program.
- Co-teach with general education staff in a collaborative model.
- Track student progress and maintain accurate attendance, behavior, and instructional data.
- Complete ESY progress reports and submit documentation to Special Services and families.
- Provide instruction based on materials and goals provided by students’ case managers.
- Utilize instructional technology and behavior management tools as needed.
- Participate in planning and implementation of summer school activities.
- Complete other duties as assigned by the summer school coordinator/Director of Special Services.
- May be required to assist with program planning, training, setup, and essential Duties
Qualifications:
- Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate with Special Education Endorsement.
- Experience working with elementary-aged students.
- Demonstrated success in managing student behavior and following behavior intervention plans.
- Proficiency in Google Suite and instructional technology tools.
- Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Understanding of challenges faced by students and families living in poverty.
- Valid First Aid/CPR Certification.
- Must successfully pass Washington State Patrol background check.
- Self-starter who thrives in collaborative, fast-paced educational settings.
- Must be available for all dates of the summer program.
Working Conditions:
- Walking or moving about in a classroom setting to provide individual instruction
- Sitting for an estimated one hour and thirty minutes to provide concentrated individual or small group instruction
- Twisting upper torso and neck constantly when observing, supervising and monitoring students
- Capable of stooping/bending, squatting and kneeling when providing instructions to younger students
- Lift and carry objects weighing 0-10 pounds constantly, 11-24 pounds occasionally and rarely 25-50 pounds. Pushing and pulling is required when assisting students in wheelchairs weighing 20 to 200 pounds
- May be required to physically handle students weighing 20 to 200 pounds during an emergency situation. Can request assistance if other employees are available
- May need to assist students in self-help skills or attend to physical needs of students
- Must have the ability to reach, grasp and handle objects using the upper extremities
- Must possess higher than average reading, writing and mathematical skills
- Specialized staff should be capable of operating automobile
Salary: Per CBA/Per Diem
Employment is contingent upon successful clearance of a Washington State Patrol, FBI fingerprint criminal history background check, and Sexual Misconduct background check.
