MPS, a division of Macmillan Publishers, a leading US publisher of Trade and Academic titles, has a job opening for a Computer Operator in our Gordonsville facility. MPS provides back office support, warehousing, and, fulfillment for Macmillan US, and is their primary distribution facility for North America.

POSITION SUMMARY: This position is responsible for all aspects of computer operations on assigned shifts. Review clarity and accuracy of documentation, ensure adherence to operational and help desk procedures, and coordinate with both technical and programming staff to ensure smooth work flow for job turnovers with corresponding documentation and procedures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. 

  • Monitors and assists with shift processing and distribution of output in compliance with schedule or requests. Assists with security of production programs and files to prevent unauthorized access. Assists with keeping track of data center equipment inventory and equipment locations.
  • Strives to ensure quality operations by creating new techniques to increase productivity and create smooth workflow. Ensures that all data center equipment is in good operational order and condition.
  • Ensures all operations procedures are followed and proper documentation is maintained. Ensures proper shift turnover procedures are followed. Ensures that all data entry tasks are completed accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Supports staff when troubleshooting problems. Communicates regularly with users concerning operational requests or job status. Provides quality customer oriented data services to the IT user community; adheres to principles as communicated by IT management.
  • Maintains familiarity with all aspects of computer operations for every shift, prepared to fill in for operations and help desk staff on any shift as needed. •         Provides feedback to VP of Information Technology, other IT staff, and New York personnel regarding abnormal types or volumes of help desk calls and operational problems.
  • Enforces established safety, health, and housekeeping policies and procedures in order to minimize injuries, loss of production time, and damage. Conforms to all company policies and procedures (Employee Handbook). Complies with all environmental, health, and safety requirements.
  • Coordinates with both technical and programming staff for production turnover of jobs, ensuring accurate documentation and restart procedures are in place. Evaluates and keeps present operation procedures and manuals current. Maintains on site and off site tape libraries

Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or equivalent; and one to three years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as computer run sheets, technical testing procedures, technical documentation manuals, write routine reports and correspondences, and the ability to communicate effectively to employees, management and vendors.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, decimals, and percent.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Must be able to make decisions within area of training during downtime, in a crisis mode, and while troubleshooting problems, or if problem is outside area of training call appropriate personnel for assistance.

Other skills and abilities: Computer skills to include Microsoft Office and Outlook; IBM ISeries computers, HP VMS and general desktop computer operations.
