Job Summary:
The General Vehicle Service Technician position performs routine and intermediate-level mechanical
work in the inspection, maintenance, and repair of school buses and district-owned vehicles. This
position operates under the supervision of a certified or lead mechanic and does not require state
mechanic certification but must work toward maintaining safe, roadworthy vehicles in compliance with
applicable Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and Michigan State Police pupil transportation
safety standards.
Qualifications:
● Ability to obtain Michigan Mechanic Certification with endorsements in required areas, such as:
○ engine tune-up and performance;
○ brakes and breaking systems;
○ front end, suspension and steering systems.
● Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements, or the
ability to obtain them within a designated period.
● Valid Michigan driver’s license required.
● High school diploma or equivalent; additional technical training or certification in automotive/diesel
technology preferred.
● 3 years of experience in automotive or diesel mechanics, with a preference for experience in fleet
or school bus maintenance preferred.
Essential Duties:
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following: (Does not include all
tasks employee may be expected to perform.)
● Perform preventative maintenance on school buses, vans, and other district vehicles (e.g., oil
changes, fluid checks, filter replacements, lubrication).
● Assist in diagnosing mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues under supervision.

● Perform minor to intermediate repairs including brakes, belts, hoses, lights, batteries, and tire
service.
● Conduct pre-trip and post-repair inspections to ensure vehicles meet safety standards.
● Maintain accurate service and repair records in accordance with district procedures.
● Prepare vehicles for state inspections and assist certified mechanics as needed.
● Respond to road calls and assist with vehicle breakdowns when directed.
● Follow all district safety protocols and procedures related to pupil transportation.
● Ensure compliance with applicable state and federal regulations governing school bus operation
and maintenance.
● Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in the transportation garage.
● Respond to vehicle breakdowns and other on-road emergencies to provide repair or coordinate
towing as needed.
● Assist with seasonal vehicle maintenance tasks and special projects as assigned.
● Other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.
● Regular and predictable in-person attendance is required for this position.
Working Conditions:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel
objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; and taste or smell. The employee is regularly required to sit
and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds such as tools, parts and
equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distant vision and the ability to adjust focus. The
ability to travel to other buildings is required. The position requires the individual to sometimes work irregular or extended work
hours and meet multiple demands from several people.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical bus and equipment. The
employee may frequently work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, gasses, fumes, and
sprays. The employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne
particles. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints. The noise level in the work environment
is usually loud and occasionally very loud.
