About the Department
The Public Works Financial Services department is seeking to fill a Senior Accountant position to perform senior level accounting work related to the support of the Public Works department functions including grants and capital projects. This position will provide support for management decision making and provide accounting leadership.
Location and hours:
This position is hybrid and will be performed on-site at the 625 Building, 625 Fourth Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN; Public Works Facility 1600 Prairie Drive, Medina MN; at other locations across the county as needed; and remote as job duties require. Work hours will be Monday through Friday with typical hours of 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. While this position is designated as hybrid, based on current requirements hires must reside in or relocate to Minnesota or Wisconsin.

This position is a full-time, benefit earning position. You must be a current regular or probationary employee of Public Works to apply for this position. Limited duration employees are not eligible.

In this position, you will: - Prepare journal entries; maintain and reconcile accounts related to Public Works programs, including grants and capital projects according to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Prepare, analyze, and reconcile complex and routine financial statements, reports, and information according to standardized methods and procedures.
- Serve as a liaison with other county departments, government agencies, external auditors, or vendors to coordinate efforts or provide independent assistance concerning accounting related tasks problems and issues.
- Perform Public Works accounting duties including assisting with preparing and submitting financial reports, reviewing direct pay requests, managing revenue/receipt processes, and preparing and providing transaction support to auditors.
- Assist in expanding developing and applying accounting procedures to solve accounting problems involving electronic data processing.
- Verify compliance with procedures and the accuracy of accounting and other financial information.
Need to have:- One of the following:
- Bachelor's degree or higher in accounting, business administration with an emphasis in accounting, or other specialty area related to the position and two years or more of professional experience in a specific functional area of accounting, auditing or financial management.
- Six years or more of professional experience in a specific functional area of accounting, auditing or financial management.
Nice to have: - Government accounting experience specific to Public Works programs; including grant, capital, and fund accounting.
- General ledger accounting experience with a thorough understanding of balance sheet accounting.
- Professional accounting experience in the accounts payable and accounts receivable areas.
- Experience with Microsoft Office applications and PeopleSoft Financials or a similar electronic accounting system.
- Ability to:
- Handle multiple priorities with minimal direction.
- Communicate effectivley both verbally and in writing.
- Meet deadlines and produce accurate work in a fast-paced office environment.
- Work effectively in a team environment with functional business and team members.
- Identify accounting issues and conduct meetings to resolve issues.
