Role Purpose
Lead the Risk & Control function for Corporate & Investment Banking (CIB) within the GCC, ensuring a strong, proactive risk culture and robust control environment across front-to-back operations. The role is responsible for embedding first-line risk ownership, strengthening control frameworks, and aligning GCC execution with global CIB risk strategy and regulatory expectations.
Key Responsibilities
1. CIB Risk & Control Strategy
- Define and execute the risk & control strategy for CIB within the GCC aligned to global business priorities.
- Act as the first line of defense (1LOD) risk leader, ensuring effective ownership of risks within business and operations.
- Drive a consistent and scalable control framework across products such as:
- Corporate Lending
- Investment Banking
- Markets (Sales & Trading)
- Treasury Services
2. Control Framework & Governance
- Establish and oversee robust control frameworks, including:
- Risk & Control Self-Assessment (RCSA)
- Key Risk Indicators (KRIs)
- Control Testing & Assurance
- Issue & Action Tracking
- Ensure strong governance through risk forums, control committees, and senior leadership reporting.
- Provide credible challenge to business, operations, and support functions.
3. Non-Financial Risk Management
- Oversee end-to-end management of non-financial risks, including:
- Operational Risk
- Conduct Risk
- Compliance Risk (in partnership with Compliance)
- Technology & Cyber Risk (in partnership with Tech teams)
- Ensure risks are proactively identified, assessed, and mitigated across the CIB lifecycle.
4. Incident, Issue & Event Management
- Lead response to operational risk events, including:
- Incident identification and escalation
- Root cause analysis
- Remediation and control enhancements
- Track and manage high-severity issues, audit findings, and regulatory observations to closure.
- Identify systemic issues and drive thematic remediation programs.
5. Regulatory & Audit Engagement
- Act as the key point of contact for internal audit, regulators, and external auditors for CIB risk & control matters within the GCC.
- Ensure readiness for regulatory exams and audits.
- Drive timely and sustainable remediation of findings.
6. Risk Reporting & Insights
- Deliver executive-level risk reporting and dashboards to global CIB leadership.
- Provide actionable insights on:
- Emerging risks
- Control effectiveness
- Risk appetite breaches
- Leverage data analytics and automation for enhanced risk monitoring.
7. Transformation & Automation
- Lead strategic initiatives to enhance the control environment through digitization and automation.
- Drive implementation and optimization of GRC platforms (e.g., Archer, ServiceNow, MetricStream).
- Embed risk by design principles into new products, processes, and system changes.
8. Stakeholder Management
- Partner closely with:
- CIB Business Heads (Coverage, Markets, IB)
- Operations & Technology Leaders
- 2LOD Risk, Compliance, and Audit teams
- Global Risk & Control leadership
- Operate effectively in a matrixed global organization, influencing senior stakeholders.
9. Team Leadership & Culture
- Build and lead a high-performing Risk & Control team within the GCC.
- Drive strong risk culture, accountability, and awareness across CIB functions.
- Develop talent, succession pipeline, and capability uplift.
Key Skills & Competencies
Domain Expertise
- Deep understanding of Corporate & Investment Banking products and lifecycle
- Strong expertise in:
- Operational Risk & Non-Financial Risk
- Control frameworks and governance
- Front-to-back CIB processes (trade lifecycle, lending lifecycle, etc.)
Leadership Skills
- Proven ability to operate at senior leadership level (Director/ED/MD equivalent)
- Strong influencing, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills
- Ability to provide independent challenge while maintaining business partnership
Analytical & Technical Skills
- Strong data orientation with ability to interpret complex risk data
- Experience with risk systems, dashboards, and GRC tools
- Familiarity with automation, AI/ML in risk monitoring (preferred)
Qualifications & Experience
- 20+ years of experience in:
- Risk & Control / Operational Risk / Business Control
- Corporate & Investment Banking environment
- Prior experience in GCC / global operating model strongly preferred
- Demonstrated experience in leading large teams and enterprise initiatives
- Bachelor’s degree required; MBA / CA / FRM / CFA preferred
