The Role
We are seeking an experienced and forward-thinking Head of Engineering to establish, lead, and grow IES’s India software engineering team, based in Pune.
This is a senior leadership role focused on engineering delivery, technical excellence, people leadership and operational rigour. As with all technology leadership roles, it’s essential to incorporate emerging AI capabilities into the team’s work.
You will provide day-to-day leadership for engineering teams in India, helping them deliver high-quality software, strengthen engineering practices, and work effectively with Product, DevOps, QA and senior leadership colleagues across IES.
The role will play a critical part in building Pune as a strategic engineering hub for IES. You will support our ambition to become an AI-first organisation and will lead the effort to apply AI responsibly and practically within your own team.
What You’ll Do
- Lead and develop the India engineering team, creating a high-performing, collaborative and delivery-focused culture
- Drive engineering delivery across agreed product and technology priorities, ensuring predictable execution and clear ownership
- Build strong engineering capability across software development, QA, cloud-native delivery and modern development practices
- Partner with UK and global leaders to align Pune engineering capacity, skills and priorities with IES’s product and business goals
- Strengthen engineering standards around architecture, code quality, testing, maintainability, security and performance
- Champion automation, CI/CD, DevOps collaboration and effective use of GitHub and modern engineering tooling
- Develop engineering managers and technical leads, supporting career growth, coaching and succession planning
- Embed secure-by-design principles, risk awareness and quality practices into everyday engineering delivery
- Partner with Product, Engineering, Cloud, DevOps and senior leadership to shape and deliver technology direction
Skills & Experience
- Senior engineering leadership experience, ideally leading multi-disciplinary software engineering teams
- Strong experience delivering complex software products or platforms in a commercial technology environment
- Deep understanding of modern software engineering practices, including agile delivery, CI/CD, test automation and cloud-native architectures
- Experience with Azure DevOps, GitHub or comparable engineering platforms and delivery toolchains
- Strong technical background with the ability to guide architecture, engineering trade-offs and delivery decisions
- Hands-on technical credibility across C#, .NET and React front-end development, with the ability to guide teams on modern engineering approaches
- Proven experience embedding quality, security, risk management and compliance into engineering delivery
- Experience applying AI-assisted engineering practices, developer productivity tooling or AI platforms at team scale
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to influence at senior levels
Nice to Have
- Experience growing engineering teams in India or scaling technology capability in a global organisation
- Exposure to AI-assisted software development, AI observability, explainability and responsible AI tooling
- Experience supporting hybrid or distributed engineering teams at scale
- Background working within software, technology or climate tech organisations
