Head of Embedded Engineering (Platform)

About the role
We are building a multi-device product company, not a one-product firmware team.
This role is for someone who can own the embedded platform across multiple current and future devices, while staying hands-on on the hardest technical problems. You will define how we build reusable firmware across SKUs, chipsets, sensors, connectivity stacks, and product tiers — without ending up with one codebase per device.
This is a player-coach role. You will architect, review, debug, code where it matters, and build the team and engineering discipline around you.
What you will own
- Embedded platform architecture across active and future SKUs
- Reuse strategy across Nordic, Telink, and future MCU / connectivity platforms
- Shared layers for HAL/BSP, logging, OTA/DFU, power management, storage, diagnostics, provisioning, and core services
- Platform engineering quality: code standards, release discipline, testability, and observability
- Technical mentoring and hiring of the embedded team
- Cross-functional execution with hardware, app, cloud, QA, manufacturing, and product
What you will do
- Define and evolve the firmware platform strategy for 5–15+ SKUs over time
- Establish what belongs in platform code vs product-specific code
- Build robust common modules for low-power embedded systems
- Stay hands-on in architecture-critical and failure-critical areas
- Drive board bring-up, root-cause debugging, and field issue resolution where needed
- Create clean interfaces across MCU/vendor changes and product variants
- Work closely with hardware to ensure firmware, PCB, RF, power, manufacturing, and diagnostics are designed as one system
- Improve OTA, telemetry, logging, boot, storage, power, and device reliability
- Set coding, review, branching, release, and documentation discipline
- Build and coach a small but strong embedded team beneath you
What success looks like
Within 12 months, you have:
- established a credible common embedded platform
- reduced firmware duplication across SKUs
- improved bring-up speed for new boards/products
- built stronger logging, OTA, and field diagnostics
- raised the technical bar for code quality and system thinking
- reduced founder dependency on day-to-day firmware decisions
- hired and coached at least 1–3 strong engineers under the platform structure
Must-have experience
- Strong hands-on embedded systems experience with shipped products
- Deep experience in C/C++ firmware development
- RTOS-based development experience
- Experience designing firmware architecture across multiple products or variants
- Strong understanding of low-power systems, debugging, and production reliability
- Experience with bring-up, interfaces, sensors, storage, OTA/DFU, and connectivity stacks
- Ability to lead technically while remaining hands-on
- Comfort operating in ambiguity and making practical architecture decisions
Strong plus
- Zephyr experience
- BLE product experience
- Consumer electronics / IoT / wearables experience
- Manufacturing diagnostics / DFT / factory test hooks
- Bootloader and OTA rollback design
- Experience with multiple MCU / silicon vendor ecosystems
- Experience leading small embedded teams in product companies
