About the role
We are looking for a Head of Content and Communications to lead how our organisation communicates, both internally and externally.
You will own content across social media, internal communications, the website, newsletters, campaigns, employer branding, leadership communication, PR, and other relevant channels. You will decide what we should say, where we should say it, and how to make it useful to the people we want to reach.
We need someone who can find good stories across the organisation, turn complex information into clear content, and build systems that help us communicate consistently.
What you will do
Own the content and communications strategy
- Develop the organisation’s content and communications strategy.
- Define our audiences, content pillars, channel strategy, editorial priorities, messaging, and tone of voice.
- Turn business priorities into content plans and campaigns.
- Build and manage an editorial calendar covering internal and external communications.
- Create practical processes for briefing, reviewing, approving, publishing, and repurposing content.
- Make sure content supports goals such as brand awareness, customer education, recruitment, employee engagement, and thought leadership.
- Review the strategy using performance data, audience feedback, and business priorities.
Lead social media
- Own our presence across LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, X, YouTube, and other relevant platforms.
- Develop a clear approach for each platform rather than publishing the same content everywhere.
- Plan and manage the social media calendar.
- Write and edit posts, articles, carousels, captions, video scripts, and campaign copy.
- Work with designers, video editors, photographers, and creative partners.
- Manage community engagement, including comments and direct messages where relevant.
- Monitor platform changes, audience behaviour, industry conversations, and content trends.
- Track reach, engagement, audience growth, website traffic, leads, and other agreed metrics.
- Test new formats and use the results to improve future content.
Manage content creation and editorial quality
You will oversee content including:
- Website and landing-page copy
- Blogs and long-form articles
- Newsletters and email campaigns
- Case studies and customer stories
- Reports, guides, and white papers
- Leadership messages and presentations
- Speeches and talking points
- Video and podcast scripts
- Press releases and company announcements
- Recruitment and employer-branding content
- Event communications
- Sales and marketing collateral
You will write some content yourself and manage the production of the rest. In both cases, you will be responsible for final quality.
You will also:
- Edit content for clarity, accuracy, structure, tone, and consistency.
- Interview employees, leaders, customers, and partners to uncover useful stories.
- Translate technical or specialised information for wider audiences.
- Maintain editorial guidelines, messaging documents, and a content library.
- Check facts, sources, names, dates, and claims before publication.
- Make sure content meets brand, accessibility, legal, and compliance requirements.
- Repurpose strong content across channels without making it feel repetitive.
Lead internal communications
- Develop and manage the internal communications strategy.
- Own company newsletters, leadership notes, town halls, internal announcements, intranet content, and collaboration-platform updates.
- Work with leadership and People teams on organisational updates, policy changes, employee programmes, and culture initiatives.
- Create communication plans for major internal projects and periods of change.
- Help leaders communicate difficult or sensitive information clearly and thoughtfully.
- Share employee stories, team achievements, and examples of company values in practice.
- Build feedback mechanisms to understand what employees are hearing, missing, or misunderstanding.
- Measure internal communication through engagement data, surveys, and employee feedback.
Manage brand voice and messaging
- Define and maintain the organisation’s tone of voice.
- Develop messaging frameworks for the company, its services, programmes, and audiences.
- Keep messaging consistent across social media, campaigns, the website, internal communications, and leadership content.
- Review high-visibility communication before publication.
- Work with brand and design teams so that verbal and visual communication support each other.
- Give other teams the tools and guidance to communicate clearly without making the content team a bottleneck.
Lead campaigns and cross-functional projects
- Plan content for launches, events, partnerships, recruitment campaigns, and company announcements.
- Work with Marketing, Sales, Product, Customer Success, People, Design, and leadership teams.
- Turn input from multiple stakeholders into one clear message.
- Write campaign briefs and coordinate copy, design, video, distribution, and approvals.
- Set timelines and keep projects moving.
- Protect the audience’s needs when stakeholders want to include too much information.
Support external communications and reputation
- Write press releases, company statements, media briefs, FAQs, and spokesperson notes.
- Identify opportunities for media coverage, speaking engagements, partnerships, and industry commentary.
- Coordinate with PR agencies and external communications partners.
- Monitor public conversations about the organisation and its sector.
- Prepare communication plans for sensitive or high-risk issues.
- Work with leadership, legal, and other teams when a response needs to be accurate and timely.
Measurement and reporting
You will define how we measure the performance of content and communications. Metrics may include:
- Reach, engagement, and audience growth
- Website traffic and SEO performance
- Newsletter subscriptions, open rates, and click-through rates
- Content-driven leads or conversions
- Media coverage and share of voice
- Employee reach and engagement
- Brand awareness and audience sentiment
- Content production time and reuse
You should be able to explain what the data means, why performance changed, and what we should do next.
What we are looking for
- Strong experience in content, communications, editorial, brand, social media, journalism, or a related field.
- Experience owning a content or communications strategy.
- Excellent writing, editing, proofreading, and storytelling skills.
- A portfolio showing work across different formats, audiences, and channels.
- A practical understanding of major social media platforms.
- Experience with both internal and external communications.
- The ability to adjust tone for employees, customers, partners, leaders, and public audiences.
- Good editorial judgment and close attention to detail.
- Experience working with senior leaders and cross-functional teams.
- The ability to manage several projects and stakeholders at once.
- Working knowledge of content management systems, social media tools, email platforms, analytics, and SEO.
- Experience managing team members, freelancers, agencies, or creative partners.
- The confidence to question an unclear brief or weak message.
- The discretion to handle sensitive information responsibly.
Preferred experience
- Building or scaling a content and communications function.
- Executive communications and thought leadership.
- Employer branding, change communications, PR, or reputation management.
- Video, podcast, webinar, or multimedia production.
- Crisis communications.
- Managing content or communications budgets.
- Using AI-assisted content tools while maintaining accuracy, originality, and editorial standards.
You do not need to meet every preferred requirement. We care more about the quality of your work, your judgment, and your ability to take ownership.
