Job Summary:
The International Group Programs serves international students with varying levels of English language proficiency who are participating in short-term, in-person programs at HPU. Each program is tailored to the particular group’s needs and focuses on experiential learning in English language as well as in American and Hawaiian cultures. Instructors primarily create lesson plans, develop materials, provide classroom instruction, and maintain basic student records (engagement and performance) but may be asked to lead and/or support walking tours and other local excursions, and assist as conversation partners. Instructors work with the Director of International Group Programs to ensure that instruction is level-appropriate and tailored to individual groups. Program lengths generally vary between 1 and 3 weeks for each group. Groups typically run during the summer, though infrequently, some groups take place during spring and/or winter break. This is a part-time position with per course compensation.
Location: On-site instruction at HPU's downtown campus sites (Waterfront Plaza, Aloha Tower Marketplace)
Compensation:
$1,050 per credit - Masters candidates
$1,150 per credit - Doctorate candidates
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
- B.A. in TESOL, TEFL, Second Language Acquisition & Teaching, Applied Linguistics or related field, or a B.A. in another field along with an internationally recognized certificate in TESOL or TEFL
- Experience teaching English to speakers of other languages
- Native-level proficiency in English
Desired Qualifications:
- M.A. in TESOL
- Strong teaching evaluations
Other Qualifications:
- Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Visa sponsorship and relocation allowance is not available for this position.
- Must meet training and background check qualifications and comply with the Protection of Minors policy.
- Able to teach classes scheduled during days, evenings, and weekends.
- Able to teach classes at multiple locations on Oahu.
- Successful candidate will be able to work in an environment that utilizes excellent time and stress management skills.
Key Responsibilities/Essential Job Functions:
- Prepare individual lessons, maintain records of student progress and assign grades as needed (90%)
- Participate in training sessions (5%)
- Perform other related duties as assigned (5%)
- Actively participates as an effective member of team by completing assigned duties, accepting additional assignments or reassignments.
