JOB SUMMARY
To provide leadership for the Surgical Services department operations and department employees. Within the framework of the objectives and policies established by the Chief Nursing Officer and the Executive Team at Hardin Medical Center, plans and coordinates Nursing Services in collaboration with the clinical and ancillary services.
Reporting Structure: Reports to the Chief Nursing Officer
Supervisory Responsibilities: Will supervise the Surgical Services department employees.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Education
Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) or in progress from an accredited school of nursing within the United States.
Work Experience
Must have three (5) years of experience as a Registered Nurse with supervisory nursing experience required. Surgical Services nurse experience required.
License/Certification
Basic Life Support (BLS),
Current certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
Certified Nurse in the Operating Room (CNOR) preferred

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
PEOPLE: Ensures department goals and objectives align with the HMC Mission and Values, policies and procedures, government, and regulatory agency standards.
Participates as a member of the HMC Division of Nursing management team in planning, policy formulation, and clinical decision making with particular reference to the role, functions, and operations for the Surgical Nursing Services.
Provides leadership for patient care, management of employees, management of supplies and equipment, and fiscal management including salaries and wages, productivity, supply and equipment costs and all other financial categories within the Surgical Department.
Responsible for staff performance, staff recruitment, staff retention, and staff development within the Surgical Department.
Patient Care: Defines and maintains the standards of nursing practice within the Surgical Department.
Continuously assesses and improves the quality of nursing care rendered within the Surgical Department.
Initiates the development of policies and procedures that govern nursing services and other services.
QUALITY: Ensures department employees are accountable and adheres to all HMC policies and procedures, government laws, and regulatory agency standards.
Responsible for verifying employee credentials under his or her position control. Will ensure that all employees remain current in required certifications and are not scheduled if ineligible to work.
FINANCE: Works with the Executive Team to develop and implement operational and capital budgeting plans; determines department budgeting needs based on zero based budget; adheres to organization budget controls and meets department budget goals.
Ensures department budget, supplies, inventory, and cost allocation are aligned with the overall hospital budget.
Responsible for collaborating with other departments and agencies regarding resources and services for improved patient care and staff development.
Responsible for planning, developing, and implementing a budgeted process for staffing and services rendered.
Evaluates the quality and cost-effectiveness of staffing and services within the goals of the department.
Enforces staffing guidelines and is responsible for ensuring all staffing productivity goals are met within the Surgical Department.
OTHER DUTIES
Serves as spokesperson for the Surgical Department and represents the hospital with professional nursing and related organizations.
Participates in appropriate meetings and committees. Completes all assignments in a timely manner.
Manages all assigned employees to ensure they are meeting facility and department expectations.
Performs other assigned duties and special projects as designated by the Chief Nursing Officer.
