About the Position
Amrita Steels Limited is seeking an experienced, energetic and highly hands-on General Manager to take overall responsibility for its scrap metal business and daily yard operations.
This is not a desk-based management position. The successful candidate must be willing to spend most of the working day in the yard and out in the field—supervising employees, inspecting materials, visiting suppliers and customers, resolving operational problems and ensuring that work is completed safely and correctly.
We need a practical leader who leads by example, understands what is happening on the ground and takes direct responsibility for the performance and profitability of the business.
Key Responsibilities
- Be physically present in the yard and actively manage daily operations.
- Supervise the receiving, weighing, grading, sorting, processing, storage, loading and dispatching of scrap metal.
- Lead, organise and motivate yard workers, drivers, machine operators and administrative staff.
- Plan daily activities, allocate duties and ensure that work is completed properly.
- Visit suppliers, customers, collection sites and other field locations when required.
- Inspect incoming materials and ensure that scrap is correctly identified, graded, weighed and priced.
- Purchase scrap metal at commercially viable prices and maintain strong supplier relationships.
- Develop sales opportunities and negotiate with buyers, recyclers, exporters and customers.
- Monitor metal prices, operating costs, margins and overall business profitability.
- Maintain strict control over stock movements, weighing, purchasing, cash and payments.
- Prevent losses caused by theft, incorrect weighing, poor sorting, contamination or weak controls.
- Ensure that machinery, vehicles and yard equipment are operated safely and properly maintained.
- Enforce health, safety, environmental and security procedures throughout the yard.
- Maintain a clean, organised, productive and secure working environment.
- Resolve operational, employee, supplier and customer issues quickly and professionally.
- Report regularly to the directors on operations, staff, stock, sales and profitability.
- Identify practical ways to improve productivity, control costs and grow the business.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate:
- Is genuinely hands-on and comfortable working in the yard and in the field.
- Leads from the front and does not manage only from an office.
- Has proven management experience in scrap metal, recycling, waste management, logistics, construction materials or a similar industrial business.
- Has strong experience managing workers and maintaining discipline, productivity and accountability.
- Has good commercial judgment and confidence in purchasing, pricing, sales and negotiation.
- Understands operating costs, margins, stock control and business profitability.
- Is honest, dependable and capable of maintaining strict control over stock and money.
- Is practical, energetic, observant and able to solve problems quickly.
- Is willing to work outdoors in a busy industrial environment.
- Can communicate effectively with workers, suppliers, customers and directors.
- Has good administrative, reporting and basic computer skills.
- Holds a valid driving licence.
Knowledge of metal grades, weighbridge systems, heavy machinery, recycling regulations or export procedures would be a strong advantage.
