Position Summary
The School Nurse for Early Childhood is responsible for providing health services and education for the children enrolled in early childhood programs and their families in Genesee County. The School Nurse for Early Childhood will support the early childhood health team in addressing the needs of the Whole Child including providing training and best practice for health and emergency care, such as first aid and sudden illness, chronic health conditions and educational programs on health topics.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in nursing or related field is required. State of Michigan Registered Nurse (RN) license required, current CPR certification.
Experience:
Preferred two years paid or volunteer experience working with children in a school or pediatric-health setting. Leadership experience in a nursing environment. Strong knowledge of computer technology, word processing, and database software required.
Skills/Other:
Ability to supervise staff. Ability to work creatively and skillfully with children birth to five age and their families. Ability to work collaboratively on a team which includes health and behavioral staff, teachers, administrators, and community partners. Excellent communication skills including teaching and public speaking abilities. Knowledge of normal child development and common delays in relation to chronic diseases. Knowledge of age-appropriate-prevention health care, communicable diseases, and community resources. Ability to perform well during emergency/crisis situations. Ability to participate in and understand quality assurance and evaluation activities. Ability to utilize district technology and work to maintain proficiency, as skill sets change with technology and/or the needs of the district. Punctuality and good attendance are required. Ability to work a flexible workday, work week, and work year. Demonstrated mental/physical ability and stamina for meeting the essential duties of the position. Discretion with confidential information. Excellent customer service skills and the ability to maintain a calm, poised and professional image at all times. Demonstrate honesty, integrity, and professionalism at all times. Ability to exercise good judgment and make decisions in accordance with board policies and established administrative guidelines with minimum supervision.
Compensation & Benefits
Pay Range: $64,372 - $89,854 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications
Work Schedule: 215 days / 7.5 hours daily
Paid Time Off:

Job Title:
School Nurse for Early Childhood
Job Summary:
The School Nurse for Early Childhood is responsible for providing health services and
education for the children enrolled in early childhood programs and their families in
Genesee County. The School Nurse for Early Childhood will support the early childhood

Essential Duties (May include, but not limited to):
1. Provides support and resources and acts as a coach, and liaison between early
childhood programs including Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP), and Head
Start.
2. Creates professional development opportunities for the Early Childhood
Programs Team.
3. Participates on the Whole Child Team, including wellness and crisis planning.
4. Disseminates health education information to students, staff, and parents.
5. Coordinates health screenings as needed.
6. Provides support for the assessment and reporting of immunization records.
7. Assists with setting up screening processes, kindergarten round-up, and required
health and nutrition trainings.
8. Promotes strategies and trainings for providing emergency care to students.
9. Supports case management efforts for students with chronic health conditions.
10. Participates in community coalitions and partnerships to address the needs of the
Whole Child.
11. Collaborates with the Nutrition Facilitator to assure healthy well-balanced meals
for all students including those with sensory aversions, allergies, or intolerances.
12. Is responsible for oversight and compliance of all health and nutrition grant
requirements for early childhood programs.
13. Responsible for creating and implementing health and nutrition policies and
procedures for early childhood programs.

Essential Duties (Continued):
14. Conduct and plan CPR, First Aid, and MERT training for Genesee Intermediate
School District programs and Countywide programs as required.
15. Collaborates with other Head Start grantees for the Health Advisory Board.
16. Collaborates with Site Coordinators in supporting care plans for students with
identified health concerns, including reviewing and approving plans.
17. Conducts newborn visits for home visiting staff.
18. Assists in program evaluation.
19. Consistently models Win-Win leadership.
Other Duties:
1. May accompany the Early Childhood Programs Team on home visits to identify
home safety hazards and child health problems and to assist the parent/guardian
in the implementation of a plan to address the safety hazards/child health care
issues.
2. Provides appropriate resources to parents and staff about health and human
resource agencies and services.
3. Performs other related duties as assigned.
