About the role

General Description
The Commodity Buyer reports directly to the Purchasing Manager and manages and administers material and general supply purchases and programs.  The Commodity Buyer has the ability to multi-task, is competent in the use of computer applications, and can handle and direct calls, requests, and complaints in a calm, professional manner.  The Commodity Buyer exemplifies the highest standard of professional decorum for which the organization strives.  

Organizational Relationships and Authority

The Commodity Buyer reports directly to the Purchasing Manager.    

Key Responsibilities
The primary responsibility of the Commodity Buyer is to support, in a professional manner, as needed throughout the organization.  Specific responsibilities may include departmental duties assigned as “core” duties.  The GSM Commodity Buyer must be cross-functional, serving as backup to other Commodity Buyers and the Purchasing Manager as required.   

Purchasing Core Responsibilities
·         Maintaining accurate data within the GSM Purchasing Module.

o   Purchasing information maintenance – lead times, contact information, order confirmations

o   Maintain a clean PO logs

o   Pricing

o   Recommending economic order and replenishment quantities for purchased items and updating as approved (as needed and on a quarterly maintenance schedule).

·         Following GSM Purchasing Processes to correctly order approved items from approved suppliers at approved prices. This may at times require a purchase prior to live demand, provided it has been approved.

·         Manage Tool Room purchases and Tool Room order entry process.

·         Collect, file, and maintain all material certifications

·         Collecting and reporting requisite supplier performance information in a timely manner.

o   Supplier scorecards, supplier audits, and supplier improvement plans

·         Proactively working with suppliers to ensure timely delivery of product and expediting as required.

·         Assisting to balance demand to other GSM Plants and outside sources as directed.

·         Creating, implementing, and auditing vendor managed inventory systems and programs.

·         Drive cost saving initiatives through competitive bidding, dual sourcing, and ordering methods. Record cost savings through established processes.

o   Evaluate and present monthly spending by department

·         Possess strong ability to source new suppliers or new products through current suppliers to consolidate spending.

o   Ability to introduce new suppliers to the Purchasing Manager and to onboard newly selected suppliers into the company processes and systems.

·         Any other duties as assigned by the Purchasing Manager.

·         Written Communication:  Writes clearly; edits work for spelling and grammar; presents numerical data effectively; effectively reads and interprets written information.

Education/Experience

·         Minimum Associates degree in Business Administration or similar discipline, Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience preferred.  Experience in a manufacturing environment, particularly in customer service/coordination a plus. Microsoft Word and Excel experience. SharePoint experience a plus.
