Job Summary:

Responsible for overseeing every aspect of produce operations including warehouse operations and store operations. This encompasses full P&L responsibilities – purchasing, billing, pricing, margins, shrink, cost controls, supplies and packaging. The purchasing of cost-efficient, high-quality products and analyzing sale trends and profit margins is a priority and base function of the position.  Ensure that the assortment, purchasing and profitability align with the department and company vision, goals and objectives. 

Communicate merchandising plans to store level to optimize space, increase customer impulse purchasing, and attain the goals of the produce department within the strategy of the company. Ensure proper execution at store level through consistent communication, frequent store visits and interaction with produce supervision, store operations and store level teammates.

Constant pursuit of new products, programs, merchandising to reach an expanded group of customers including Gelson’s legacy customers. Follow and develop trends that are relevant and enhances the customer experience.

This position is responsible for the produce department and overall company oversight.

Essential Duties:   

  1. Lead the produce team to optimize the goals and objectives of the company.
  2. Develop and oversee all department strategies.
  3. Communicate daily to the entire team, supporting their roles and responsibilities.
  4. Be the face of Gelson’s in the produce industry.
  5. Mentor direct reports to facilitate a culture of growth, learning, teamwork and success.
  6. Analyze inventory, retail pricing, product costs, cost of sales and gross profits.
  7. Review all purchasing reports to ensure proper fulfillment to the stores.
  8. Review daily, weekly, and period reports to ensure proper direction and execution of departmental goals.
  9. Prepare weekly/monthly reports for management review. 
  10. Develop and maintain relationships with vendors and growers, negotiate product programs. 
  11. Carefully coordinate with Marketing Department regarding items for promotion across all tools used to communicate value to our customers. 
  12. Ensure that all store locations inventories are stocked with promotional products. 
  13. Coordinate with Systems Department to ensure accurate pricing on products. 
  14. Ensure that all locations receive proper and consistent communication. 
  15. Actively review competitive local activities and market conditions. 
  16. Address issues or matters related to vendors, stores, customers or departments. 
  17. Meet with buyers regularly to communicate sales goals and objectives and receive feedback. 
  18. Other related duties and assignments as required.

     Qualifications:

    1. High school diploma or equivalent; College degree preferred.
    2. Related experience in retail management, merchandising, purchasing, marketing and/or related field preferred.
    3. Seven (7) years of Retail experience, at least 2 of which in a director or equivalent role.
    4. Highly proficient computer skills including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and email applications.
    5. Expert knowledge of produce and seasonality.
    6. Proven leader. Takes charge and has ability to get things done.

    Pay Range $122,000 - $140,000
