Intern - Research & Engineering

GTI Energy is seeking a Research & Engineering Intern to support the execution of applied research and development projects focused on advancing low‑carbon, energy‑efficient, and innovative energy technologies. The intern will work closely with engineers, scientists, and technical staff in a collaborative R&D environment, contributing to laboratory testing, engineering analysis, data collection, and technical documentation that support GTI Energy’s mission to address global energy challenges.

This role provides hands‑on experience in real‑world engineering and research activities, exposure to cutting‑edge energy technologies, and opportunities for professional growth within a multidisciplinary team environment.

The position will be based at GTI Energy Headquarters in the Chicagoland area. We offer a hybrid/core work schedule in which employees work remotely on Mondays and Fridays and are on-site Tuesday through Thursday. Interns may be required to be on-site up to five days per week depending on lab work and project requirements.

 

• Assist with engineering design, analysis, and applied research tasks across assigned projects
• Support laboratory and pilot‑scale testing, including test setup, execution, troubleshooting, and teardown
• Collect, analyze, and document experimental, field, or modeling data
• Assist in prototype builds, equipment testing, and system evaluations
• Contribute to technical reports, presentations, and project documentation for internal and external stakeholders
• Collaborate with cross‑functional teams in a team‑based R&D environment
• Follow established safety procedures, testing protocols, and quality standards
• Perform other duties as assigned to support project and organizational needs

 

• Interest in engineering, applied research, or energy‑related technologies
• Ability to think critically, analyze data, and apply technical concepts
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
• Willingness to learn and follow laboratory safety and testing procedures
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and willingness to learn technical software/tools as needed

 

• Actively enrolled in an engineering, science, or related technical degree program
  • Completion of at least one year of undergraduate coursework (varies by role)
• Preferred majors may include mechanical, chemical, electrical, process, systems, data science, or related disciplines

 

The pay range for this position is $17 - $28 USD per hour. This pay range is GTI Energy’s good faith estimate, and the actual pay may vary based on a number of factors including, but not limited to, GTI Energy’s business or organizational needs and an individual’s relevant experience, education, qualifications, certifications, skills, seniority, geographic location, and/or performance. Compensation details listed in this posting reflect the base hourly rate, monthly rate, or annual salary only, and do not include bonus. The range listed is just one component of GTI Energy’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include annual bonuses, paid time off, and region-specific benefits.
