ROLE INTENT
- This role is for a design-led, technically strong garment technologist who can rethink heat-protective suits from first principles.
- The goal is not to preserve legacy designs.
- The goal is to reduce cost, reduce weight, and improve function through smarter patterning, fabric usage, and construction logic.
CORE OBJECTIVES (What Success Looks Like)
- 10–25% reduction in fabric consumption through smarter pattern layouts
- Simplified constructions without loss of protection
- Improved wearer mobility and reduced heat burden
- Production-ready designs that factories can execute consistently
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

- Redesign panel geometry to:
o Reduce waste
o Improve articulation
o Eliminate unnecessary reinforcements
- Optimize seam placement for heat exposure zones
2- Fabric & Layer Strategy
- Evaluate current aramid / aluminized / single layer flame retardant fabric usage
- Propose:
o Hybrid fabric zoning
o Alternative layering strategies
o Lighter constructions where possible
- Balance protection, weight, stiffness, and cost
3- Cost Engineering (Design-Led)
o Design simplification
o Lower GSM where appropriate without compromising on safety standards
o Reduced sewing time
- Avoid “material swapping only” cost cutting
4. Factory-Facing Development
- Work directly with production teams
- Translate designs into:
o Clear tech packs
o Accurate consumption sheets
o Repeatable constructions
- Iterate quickly based on sampling feedback
EXPERIENCE & PROFILE
Required
- 4+ years’ experience in garment technology / product development
- Strong pattern-making and construction knowledge
- Experience with technical, industrial, or protective apparel
- Comfort using CAD or digital pattern systems
- Hands-on mindset — willing to sample, cut, and test
Strongly Preferred
o Heat / flame protective apparel
o Aramid or aluminized fabrics
o Industrial PPE or workwear
- Curious, experimental, and outcome-driven
- Not wedded to legacy constructions or compliance dogma
STANDARDS & COMPLIANCE
- Working awareness of heat and flame protection standards
- Ability to design efficiently within standards, not blindly overbuild for them
DELIVERABLES (Contract-Based)
- 2–3 redesigned suit platforms
- Clear before/after cost and weight comparisons
- Production-ready patterns and tech packs
- Documentation for internal handover
IP & COMMERCIAL TERMS
- Work-for-hire: all designs and IP vest with JLC
