About Starboard
Starboard is the AI-native operating system for global freight forwarding. We sell to mid-market freight forwarders (20–200 employees) across the US and Canada who use our autonomous AI agents to quote, source rates, and run pricing operations. Our quoting agent handles ~80% of quotes without human intervention with a 30-second response time, integrated against 150+ airline systems and dozens of carrier portals. We're backed by Eclipse Ventures and Garuda Ventures and based in Toronto / New York.
We've spent two years building the unsexy infrastructure under the AI — the rate sheet ingestion, the carrier scrapers, the integrations — that everyone else is now trying to replicate. This role exists to keep that infrastructure alive and growing.
What you'll do
This is a hybrid role. On any given day you'll be doing one of three things:
1. Owning carrier integrations and web scrapers (~50%). We scrape rates and tariffs from 100+ carrier portals. Logins break, schemas change, captchas evolve, new carriers get added. You own the health of this layer — monitoring, fixing breakages within hours, and onboarding new sources as customer demand requires.
2. Acting as a forward deployed engineer for our top accounts (~30%). When a customer hits an edge case — a malformed rate sheet, an oddly structured surcharge, a workflow we don't yet support — you'll be the engineer who jumps on a call with their pricing manager, understands the problem, and either ships a fix or scopes it for the product team. You will speak to customers directly. You will write code that ships the same day.
3. Closing out the bug backlog (~20%). P2/P3 bugs that the core product team doesn't have cycles for. You'll triage with our APM, prioritize ruthlessly, and ship fixes.
What success looks like in 6 months
- Carrier scraper uptime is at 95%+ and you've onboarded at least 10 new carrier sources without engineering escalation
- Customer-reported bugs in your queue have a median time-to-fix of under 48 hours
- At least 3 of our top-10 customers know your name and trust you to make their integration problems go away
- The Head of Engineering has stopped getting paged for scraper breakages
You're a fit if you have
- Candidates from Tier 1 colleges will be considered only (IITs, IIITs, BITS)
- 4+ years of professional software engineering experience, with at least 2 years working on production systems that real customers depend on
- Strong Python (we use Python heavily for scrapers, integrations, and backend services)
- Experience with web scraping at production scale — Playwright, Selenium, anti-bot evasion, captcha handling, headless browser orchestration
- Experience integrating with messy third-party APIs and portals (no clean docs, broken schemas, undocumented rate limits)
- Comfort talking directly to non-technical customers and translating their problem into a technical fix
- A track record of shipping fast and unblocking yourself without hand-holding
- Willing to work on Eastern Standard time
Bonus points for
- Experience in logistics, freight, supply chain, or any B2B SaaS where the back-office workflows are gnarly
- Worked at a seed/Series A startup as one of the first 10–20 engineers
- Have built or maintained scraping/integration infrastructure that served paying customers
- Experience with LLM-based pipelines or agentic systems (we use these heavily, but you don't need to be an ML engineer)
