About Rekise Marine
Rekise Marine is building autonomous ships and submarines that operate in the world's most hostile environments. We're executing India's flagship autonomous submarine project — the Jalkapi XLAUV — on order from the Indian Navy. This is an unmanned submarine weighing over 20 tons that can travel 5,000+ kilometers autonomously and operate in the ocean for 30+ days at a time.
We're creating some of the largest autonomous robots in the world, machines with direct impact on the global economy and national security. While autonomous cars in India may still be a dream, autonomous ships and submarines are already a reality, and it is possible to build for the world from India.
The Role
We are looking for a Technical Lead to own the architecture and delivery of the command & control system for autonomous submarines and ships, while growing and mentoring the engineering team building it. You'll lead the design of the frontend command & control GUI and the real-time backend services behind it — the mission-critical systems operators rely on to visualize vessel state, execute commands, manage missions, and respond to system alerts in real-time.
This role carries both hands-on technical ownership and people leadership: you'll set technical direction, run design and code reviews, and mentor a small team of engineers, all while operating in a fast-moving, ambiguous startup environment where priorities and requirements evolve quickly.
In This Role, You Will
- Own technical architecture: Lead the design of distributed, real-time systems spanning telemetry ingestion, command routing, and mission-critical frontend interfaces.
- Lead and mentor: Guide 3–4 engineers through code reviews, design reviews, and day-to-day technical mentorship, raising the bar on quality and craft.
- Drive design reviews: Run and participate in architectural discussions, evaluating trade-offs across the frontend, backend, and data layers.
- Navigate ambiguity: Translate loosely defined operator and mission requirements into concrete technical plans, adjusting quickly as priorities shift.
- Build distributed systems: Design low-latency services (WebSockets, REST, gRPC) for command routing, mission execution, and telemetry streaming over bandwidth-constrained maritime networks.
- Set the technical bar: Establish coding standards, testing practices, and architectural guardrails across the stack.
- Collaborate cross-functionally: Partner with robotics teams on system integration, and with operators directly on UI/UX feedback.
Required Qualifications
- 7–10 years of hands-on software engineering experience, with strong full-stack depth across frontend (React.js/Next.js) and backend systems.
- Distributed systems experience: proven track record designing and operating distributed, real-time, or high-throughput systems in production.
- Comfort with ambiguity: demonstrated ability to operate effectively in a startup environment scoping problems with incomplete information and adapting as things change.
- Mentorship track record: at least 1 year of experience conducting code reviews, design reviews, and mentoring 3–4 engineers.
- Practical experience with WebSockets, and either REST or gRPC, for real-time communication and data streaming.
- Solid understanding of state management for complex application state (Redux, Context API, Zustand, or similar).
- Hands-on backend experience building services in Node.js, Python, Go, or similar.
- Database experience with SQL (PostgreSQL, MySQL) or NoSQL (MongoDB, DynamoDB), including query and performance optimization.
- Strong debugging skills using browser DevTools, network monitoring, and backend logging tools.
- Familiarity with Docker and CI/CD pipelines.
Preferred Experience
- Experience building command & control, telemetry, or monitoring systems (industrial dashboards, flight control interfaces).
- Familiarity with geospatial/mapping libraries for mission planning (Leaflet, Mapbox, Cesium, or similar).
- Understanding of safety-critical systems or mission-critical software design patterns.
- Knowledge of robotics, IoT, or edge computing.
- Prior experience as a technical lead, staff engineer, or engineering manager in a startup.
Why Join Rekise Marine
- Build the Bridge to Autonomy: Architect the software platform that operators rely on to command autonomous vessels from our flagship Jalkapi XLAUV, a 20-ton submarine travelling 5,000+ kilometres underwater, to platforms operating from the coast to the deep sea.
- Mission Impact: Your applications are the eyes, ears, and command surface for autonomous vessels on live missions including defence and security operations of national importance.
- Leadership Scope: Shape the technical direction and the team from architecture decisions to the engineers you mentor and grow.
- Cross-Disciplinary Work: Build at the intersection of web engineering, AI, perception, and robotics.
- Growth: As we scale, your role grows from technical lead to platform architect, with the scope to shape the engineering organisation around you.
- Benefits: Compensation benchmarked to top-quartile for the role, health insurance for you and your family, and other benefits.
