About the role

πŸš€ Description

Interdisciplinary teamwork is at the heart of the FDL.AI philosophy, and our experience has shown that a mix of skill sets creates results far greater than the sum of their individual parts. Working closely during the eight-week research sprints, teams achieve outputs that might otherwise take years. Our growing international network provides great value for its members, many of whom have continued work on projects they began at FDL.AI.

FDL.AI is a cutting-edge AI research accelerator focused on applying machine learning to solve complex challenges in heliophysics and space weather. Working in collaboration with NASA, Google Cloud, NVIDIA, Pasteur Labs & ISI, and other partners, FDL.AI teams develop innovative AI solutions to advance our understanding of the Sun and its impact on Earth and space exploration. Sprint outputs have been featured in peer-reviewed journals, conference presentations, posters and numerous news features. Researchers have also gone on to join some of the world’s most prestigious technology, Earth Observation companies and academic institutions in a variety of roles.

🌞 Role Details

This is a full-time remote contract (8 weeks) for AI/ML data scientists, domain researchers, and software engineers who are based in or are US citizens. The role involves working on AI technologies for space science challenges, collaborating with experts in the field, and contributing to cutting-edge research and tool development in a fast-paced environment.

πŸ’‘Why?

FDL.AI brings brilliant minds to big questions - such as β€˜can we use chained ML to better model solar eruptions?’ - and gives researchers a chance to develop solutions with the potential to advance science, inform debate and save lives. From asteroid characterization to early-warning systems for natural disasters, there is huge potential to make a difference with FDL.AI. Build best practices, unlock powerful partnership opportunities and help humanity!

πŸ”¬Are you a good fit?

You are or have:

  • Currently pursuing a PhD or completed a Postdoc in a relevant field (heliophysics, space science, physics, computer science, machine learning)
  • Strong programming skills with experience in AI/ML frameworks
  • Knowledge of or interest in solar physics, space weather, or related domains
  • Ability to work in fast-paced, collaborative research environments
  • Experience with scientific data analysis or modeling
  • Bonus: Published research in heliophysics, space weather, or AI applications
  • Bonus: Experience with time-series data or multi-instrument observations

🌟 Application Process

  • Application submission
  • Cultural interview
  • Technical interview with research team
  • Selection

Teams are matched based on expertise, research interests and whilst we try to accommodate teams to similar/timezones this may not always be possible.

⏰ Total expected time to decision: 2-4 weeks after application deadline
