About the role

This position can be based in our Uniondale, New York or Boulder, Colorado office.

FEI is seeking a mechanical engineer who thrives in environments where the path is not fully defined, the problems are new, and the solutions require creativity, rigor, and teamwork. Our products span precision oscillators, advanced atomic clocks, and emerging quantum‑sensing technologies. These systems demand thoughtful mechanical design, deep curiosity, and a willingness to explore new methods in analysis, testing, and manufacturing.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys learning, experimenting, collaborating across disciplines, and raising the bar on what is possible. We value engineers who take ownership, support the team beyond their formal responsibilities, and approach everyday tasks with pride and enthusiasm.

What You Will Do

  • Design mechanical components and assemblies for high‑reliability electronic systems, from concept through detailed CAD models and drawings.
  • Perform structural and thermal analysis using tools such as ANSYS Mechanical, Icepak, or equivalent numerical methods, complemented by hand calculations and first‑principles reasoning.
  • Prototype, test, and iterate on new designs, including hands‑on work in the lab to evaluate mechanical and thermal performance.
  • Collaborate closely with electrical, firmware, manufacturing, and test teams to solve cross‑disciplinary challenges and ensure cohesive system performance.
  • Apply design‑for‑manufacturing principles including tolerance analysis, fastening methods, machining processes, and material selection.
  • Investigate new technologies and methods, bringing fresh ideas and research to support next‑generation products.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement, including documentation, process refinement, and team knowledge‑sharing.
  • Support the team wherever needed, especially during critical project phases, even when tasks fall outside traditional mechanical engineering boundaries.

What We’re Looking For

  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field.
  • Strong fundamentals in mechanics, heat transfer, materials, and engineering fundamentals.
  • Experience with CAD tools (Autodesk Inventor or similar).
  • Exposure to FEA, CFD, or thermal modeling tools, or the ability to learn them quickly.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes and mechanical design best practices.
  • Ability to break down ambiguous problems, research unfamiliar topics, and propose practical solutions.
  • Clear communication skills and a collaborative mindset.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with electronics packaging, precision machine design, or high‑reliability systems.
  • Programming or scripting skills for analysis automation or data processing.
  • Hands‑on prototyping or lab experience.
  • Familiarity with thermal or structural testing methods.

Why Join FEI

You will work on technologies that push the boundaries of timing, sensing, and system performance. You will be part of a team that values curiosity, craftsmanship, and collaboration. And you will have the opportunity to shape products that operate in some of the most demanding environments in the world

Salary Range: $115K-$135K based on experience
