Role Description: The Freelance Audio Engineer role is a remote, contract position focused on delivering high-quality audio for game projects. Day-to-day responsibilities include recording, editing, and mixing in-game audio assets such as dialogue, sound effects, and environmental sounds. The role involves collaborating with game designers, artists, and producers to align audio elements with creative and technical requirements. The Audio Engineer will also help implement audio within game engines, troubleshoot audio issues, and maintain consistent sound standards across projects.
Qualifications & Technical Skills
- Proficiency in audio engineering, including recording, editing, mixing, and mastering using industry-standard DAWs such as Reaper, Ableton Live, Pro Tools, or Logic Pro (Reaper experience is highly preferred for indie workflows).
- Hands-on experience with game engines, specifically Unity or Unreal Engine, including the direct integration and basic scripting of audio assets.
- Strong proficiency with audio middleware, particularly FMOD or Wwise, to build dynamic, interactive, and adaptive soundscapes.
- Experience in sound design and synthesis, utilizing software and plugins (e.g., iZotope RX for cleanup, Serum, Kontakt) to create original sound effects, ambiences, and audio textures.
- Strong practical knowledge of microphones and acoustics, with the ability to capture clean, high-quality recordings in varied environments.
- Understanding of audio-visual (AV) systems and signal flow, including basic setup and troubleshooting in studio or home environments.
- Ability to collaborate effectively in remote teams using project management and communication software (e.g., Jira, Slack, Discord), manage deadlines, and respond constructively to feedback.
- Prior experience working on game audio or other interactive projects is highly beneficial.
- Relevant education, certification, or a strong portfolio demonstrating audio work and engine integration for games or media.
