About the role

Freeborn County is accepting applications for a 40 hour a week Seasonal Highway Maintenance Worker in the Highway Department.  The position is responsible for general labor in the maintenance of county highways, County Parks, and other county facilities.   Applicant must have a valid Minnesota Driver’s license, must be 18 years of age, must have good communication skills, and able to lift 70 lbs. occasionally.

Wage: $16.00 Hourly

THE POSITION

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

Ability to perform any combination of the following duties:

  1. Mowing and trimming county and county highway facilities, including roadways
  2. Assist in the installation, maintenance, and inventory of traffic signs
  3. Tally and track material placement and load counts
  4. Patch bituminous or concrete surfaced roadways
  5. Operate and maintain various equipment
  6. Litter and refuse pick up and removal
  7. Miscellaneous tasks related to the maintenance of county highways  

Ability to safely operate the following equipment:

  1. Pickup trucks
  2. Utility vehicles
  3. Motorized hand and power tools
  4. Weed trimmers
  5. Hand mowers
  6. Zero-turn and winged rotary mowers
  7. Trailers
  8. Other highway-related equipment

OTHER POSITION FUNCTIONS:

  1. Assist other county staff as assigned
  2. Other duties as apparent or assigned

REQUIREMENTS

WORKING CONDITIONS: 90% Field; 10% Maintenance Facility

Employees required to work outdoors in all weather conditions during the months of May through September.  Weather conditions encountered may include heat, cold, rain, snow, sleet, wind, etc. Safety boots must be worn at all times.

HOURS OF WORK:

40 hours per week, typically Monday – Thursday, 6:00 am – 4:30 pm, with varying schedules that may include Friday, Saturday, and Sunday work.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Ability to perform all essential position functions
  2. Must possess a valid Minnesota Driver’s License
  3. Must be 18 years of age by the first date of employment
  4. Must be able to communicate effectively with the public and co-workers
  5. Must be able to lift 70 pounds and work in a variety of weather conditions
  6. Must be neatly groomed
  7. Must be able to physically perform the job duties assigned
  8. Must be punctual and present on all scheduled days
