Job Overview
The Supervisor Routing Sp Ed ensures safe, compliant, and efficient transportation services for Fort Bend ISD students, with a primary focus on Special Education (SPED) and McKinney-Vento eligible students. This role oversees complex routing operations, ensures alignment with IEP/ARD requirements and federal McKinney-Vento provisions, and collaborates closely with Special Education, Student Services, and Transportation leadership to support equitable access to transportation services. Emphasis is placed on safety, compliance, responsiveness, and operational effectiveness.

Position Description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Operation

  • Provides transportation information to students, parents, and district staff
  • Provides data support for boundary planning and redistricting projects
  • Develops bus routes based on student enrollment and attendance boundaries zones
  • Creates new 2-mile and hazardous boundaries including stops, runs and makes adjustments to reflect the changes
  • Coordinates periodic updates to the student database and attendance zones
  • Provides route rosters and other data supporting preparation of state and local transportation reports
  • Trains and supports routing staff and appropriate district personnel in the use of routing software report generation capabilities
  • Performs routing optimization for the following school year and other required beginning and end of the year processes as necessary
  • Visits site location to inspect street location and address range
  • Imports and exports database files to the routing system
  • Investigates and resolves complaints/concerns regarding routing safety
  • Works on special projects assigned by the Executive Director of Transportation Department and other administrative personnel
  • Investigates and reviews all driver/direction issues and determines prevention measures
  • Oversees and manages routing for Special Education transportation, ensuring compliance with IEP/ARD transportation requirements
  • Coordinates transportation services for McKinney-Vento eligible students, including frequent address changes and school-of-orgin transportation
  • Collaborates with Special Education, Student Services, Homeless Liaison, and campus staff to ensure timely and compliant transportation placements
  • Monitors and adjusts Special Education routes based on student needs, program changes, medical accommodations, and staffing availability
  • Ensures routing decisions align with federal, state, and district regulations governing Special Education and McKinney-Vento transportation
  • Serves as a point of contact for escalated Special Education and McKinney-Vento routing concerns, resolving issues in a timely and professional manner
  • Supports documentation and data accuracy related to eligibility, service delivery, compliance reporting
Administrative
  • Develops, modifies and maintains routing reports required for campus, administrator, and transportation record purposes
  • Maintains current district routing software maps and coordinates updates for street changes and modifications
  • Maintains and updates student stop count and AM/PM stop times for routing software program
  • Maintains a roster of students for reporting purposes and eligibility requirements
  • Maintains communication with supervisors, schools, the public and bus drivers regarding bus route issues and changes that would reflect on the Fort Bend ISD School Zone & Bus Route Web Query
  • Analyzes, configures and generates student data from Skyward program
  • Ensures data accuracy by conducting field visits to resolve conflicts
  • Acts as liaison with district technology department and third party software companies to maintain proper software and hardware operations and resolve programming errors
  • Supports, designs, maintains and updates security changes for the database programs for the Transportation Department
  • Attends professional development classes/training to keep abreast of innovative techniques in the transportation field and/or District sponsored meetings related to zoning/rezoning or changing of feeder patterns
        Supervisory Responsibilities
        • Oversees the work of Transportation Department Routing Specialist

        Qualification Requirements

        • High School diploma or GED
        • Bachelor's degree preferred
        • Valid Texas Drivers License
        • Meets McKinney-Vento requirements within established timelines
        • Ability to obtain and maintain district-required training and certifications related to student transportation, Special Education compliance. Must meet district employment eligibility standards, including background checks and required training
        • Minimum of 3 years in transportation management and/or supervision with emphasis in transportation routing using Transfinder software, preferred
        • Possesses operational/functional knowledge of computerized routing system
        • Knowledge of demographics, including streets and subdivisions in the Fort Bend ISD School District, preferred
        • Knowledge of database creation, queries, and report development
        • Ability to coordinate new and revised bus routes and schedules
        • Ability to problem solve and work with little or no assistance or supervision
        • Ability to work effectively with campus principals, staff, students, and parents
        • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
        • Problem-solving consisting of bringing several factions together, identifying areas of disagreement and causing resolution
        • Knowledge of Special Education transportation requirements, including IEP/ARD processes
        • Working knowledge of McKinney‑Vento Act transportation provisions and school-of-origin requirements
        • Ability to manage complex, high‑touch routing scenarios with sensitivity to student needs and family circumstances
        • Strong collaboration skills when working with cross‑functional departments and external stakeholders
        • Ability to handle confidential student information in compliance with FERPA and district guidelines
