Fairview School District is seeking a K-12 School Guidance Counselor for the 2026-2027 school year. We are looking for a team player who will assist in supporting all students in our district through positive encouragement. The counselor will implement the school counseling and guidance program curriculum; conduct counseling and guidance learning activities in the classroom for each grade level during the year in collaboration with the teaching staff. Establish and maintain effective relationships with staff and administrators; communicate with administrators, teachers, students, parents, and the community regarding the counseling and guidance program and its role in the educational program and the developmental needs of students.
The counselor will serve as a reference source for current information on colleges, technical education, apprenticeships, armed services, and other educational programs and career opportunities, including scholarships, and will also serve as the 12th Grade Class Advisor (for an additional stipend).
Fairview is an agricultural community located in the beautiful Yellowstone River valley along the North Dakota border near the Yellowstone and Missouri River Confluence.

Fairview School runs on a 4-day school week. We utilize Power School and are a 1:1 Chromebook / Google school with technology and resources available to integrate with your teaching. Small class sizes and opportunities for dual college credit through Williston State College, Miles Community College, and Montana Tech: Highlands further enhance the educational experience we provide for our students.
Teaching salary depends on education level and/or verification of previous years of experience. This position has a one-month extended contract, two weeks before and two weeks after. Certified teachers receive a quarterly bonus based on the current oil revenues received.
District housing within walking distance of the school is available at a reasonable cost, with access to a free on-campus community fitness room. Opportunities for extra-curricular positions may also be available.

TITLE: School Guidance Counselor

UNIVERSAL OBLIGATIONS/EXPECTATIONS OF EACH STAFF MEMBER
It is the expectation of the District that each staff member will: (1) put the safety, health and well-being of
students at the forefront of all actions, job responsibilities and decisions, (2) undertake all duties in
alignment with the District’s Strategic Plan, and (3) comply with Board policies, rules, regulations, and
directives.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Implements school counseling and guidance program curriculum; conduct counseling and
guidance learning activities in the classroom for each grade level during the year in collaboration
with the teaching staff.
• Participate in, coordinate and conduct activities that contribute to the effective operation of the
counseling program and school.
• Establish and maintain effective relationships with staff and administrators; communicate with
administrators, teachers, students, parents, and the community regarding the counseling and
guidance program and its role in the educational program and the developmental needs of
students.
• Cooperate and collaborate with other professionals in enhancing the education of students.
• Communicate with elementary, middle, and high school students and staff, as well as post-
secondary personnel to assist students in making a smooth transition between each, as needed.
• Guide individuals and groups of students through the development of educational plans and
necessary coursework required for graduation. As well as providing orientation to new students
regarding the District’s educational opportunities and/or career paths.
• Serves as a reference source for current information on colleges, technical education,
apprenticeships, armed services, and other educational programs and career opportunities,
including scholarships.
• Serve as the school/district test coordinator; act as the main ACT and other standardized tests
assessment contact; making the arrangements for test administration, distribution and collection
of test materials.
• Reviews, monitors and evaluates academic progress of students and makes recommendations for
modifications as appropriate. As well as monitoring and publishing the student eligibility list
weekly.
• Assists those students who are showing signs of having educational difficulties, discussing
alternatives with students and advises in the selection of what seems to be the most desirable
course of action.
• Conducts structured, goal-oriented, individual, small and large group counseling sessions to assist
students in exploring, interpreting and developing personal decision-making competencies, to
enhance self-esteem and self-understanding; develop academic, career and personal/social life
plans.
• Refer students with problems to appropriate program specialists or community agencies.
• Participate in and facilitate the intervention team process.
• Collaborate with school administrators in developing the master schedule.
• Utilize the School Information System (SIS) (PowerSchool) to build the courses, course sections,
schedule students and changing student schedules. As well as ongoing professional development
to stay current with the SIS.

• Participate in and attend all IEP, 504 meetings, parent/teacher conferences, professional
development activities, staff meetings and trainings.
• Serve as the 12th Grade Class Advisor (for an additional stipend)

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• At least three years of appropriately certified teacher or counseling experience in addition to
completion of a college- approved guidance K-12 major or minor.
• Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
• Ability to effectively communicate, orally and in writing, with students, parents, and staff.
• Ability to handle stressful situations.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality of student matters.
• Ability to read and analyze general counseling periodicals and professional journals.
• Ability to solve problems in a practical and workable manner.
• Ability to use age-appropriate language and accompanying techniques in one-on-one settings as
well as group settings.
EQUIPMENT USED:
A variety of electronic and technology devices, copy machine, fax machine, telephone/voice mail.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works inside. The noise level in the work
environment is usually quiet to moderate. The employee is often required to meet deadlines with severe
time constraints.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; occasionally walk and
stand; talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision,
depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
