Fabric Platform Architect
The Fabric Platform Architect defines the target architecture, standards, and guardrails for the
entire Microsoft Fabric-based analytics landscape. The role provides technical leadership to the
analytics engineering team, drives platform strategy, governance frameworks, and technology
decisions — ensuring scalability, security, and alignment with enterprise requirements. The
architect combines strategic responsibility with hands-on implementation, working operationally
alongside the team while shaping the long-term platform direction. A core element of the role is
driving the organisation's transformation toward a federated, data mesh-oriented operating model including the development of a concrete maturity roadmap — and owning the SAP BW migration and decommissioning strategy.
Your area of responsibility
• Provide technical leadership to the analytics engineering team — setting architectural
direction, reviewing designs, and ensuring adherence to standards, without disciplinary
management responsibility
• Define and evolve the target architecture for the Microsoft Fabric analytics platform —
covering data ingestion, transformation, storage, semantic layer, and consumption
• Contribute hands-on to the implementation and optimization of platform components,
pipelines, and data products alongside the analytics engineering team
• Drive the evolution toward a data mesh operating model — defining domain ownership,
data product contracts, federated governance principles, and self-serve platform
capabilities
• Develop and maintain a concrete data mesh maturity roadmap with defined stages,
milestones, and success criteria to guide the organisation's incremental transformation
• Own the SAP BW migration and decommissioning strategy — assessing current
dependencies, defining target-state integration patterns in Fabric, planning migration
waves, and managing the transition toward a fully Fabric-native analytics landscape
• Own the interface and integration strategy for connecting adjacent systems (e.g. SAP BW,
ERP, CRM) to the Fabric platform, including defining integration patterns, interface
standards, and data flow architecture
• Establish architectural standards, design patterns, and best practices across the analytics
landscape (e.g. Medallion architecture, naming conventions, security models)
• Own technology decisions and evaluate new Fabric capabilities for enterprise readiness
• Design the governance framework for Microsoft Purview — including data classification
strategy, sensitivity label policies, compliance requirements, and glossary structure
• Drive platform-level decisions on capacity management, workspace strategy, and
licensing optimization in Microsoft Fabric
• Collaborate with Enterprise Architecture, IT Security, and Compliance to ensure alignment
with corporate policies and regulatory requirements
• Create and maintain architectural blueprints, reference architectures, and decision
records
• Act as the primary technical counterpart for IT management on analytics platform topics
• Assess and mitigate architectural risks, technical debt, and scalability constraints
• Drive cross-functional alignment between data engineering, business intelligence, and
data governance initiatives
Must-have requirements
• Degree in computer science, information technology, engineering, or a comparable
qualification
• More than 8 years of professional experience in the Microsoft data and analytics stack,
with at least 3 years in an architectural or technical lead role
• Deep understanding of Microsoft Fabric architecture — including Lakehouses,
Warehouses, Notebooks, Dataflows Gen2, Semantic Models, Eventstreams, and capacity management
• Proven hands-on implementation skills — ability and willingness to work operationally on
the platform, not only in a strategic capacity
• Extensive experience with Fabric predecessor technologies and their architectural
evolution:
• Azure Synapse Analytics
• Azure Data Factory
• Power BI Premium / Pro (including deployment pipelines, workspace governance)
• SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) or Azure Analysis Services
• Proven experience integrating SAP BW with Microsoft Fabric — including knowledge of
extraction patterns, data flow design, and operational considerations
• Experience developing migration and decommissioning strategies for legacy BI/data
warehouse platforms, ideally SAP BW
• Experience designing and governing Microsoft Purview at enterprise scale — including
data catalog strategy, classification policies, sensitivity labels, scan rules, and business
glossary governance
• Strong understanding of data architecture patterns (Medallion architecture, dimensional
modeling, data product thinking)
• Solid understanding of data mesh principles — including domain ownership, data product
contracts, federated governance, and self-serve data infrastructure — with the ability to
translate these into a staged maturity roadmap
• Proficiency in SQL, DAX, and Power Query (M) at a level sufficient to both review and
actively contribute to implementation
• Hands-on experience with PySpark / Python in notebook environments
• Proven ability to create architectural blueprints, reference architectures, and technicaldecision frameworks
• Experience with cloud security concepts, identity management (Azure AD / Entra ID), and
data protection requirements
• Track record of driving architectural decisions in cross-functional, enterprise-scale
environments
• Strong communication skills — ability to convey complex technical concepts to both
technical teams and IT management
• High degree of initiative, strategic thinking, and ownership
• Microsoft Certified: Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate (DP-600)
Nice-to-have requirements
• Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert (AZ-305) or Azure Data Engineer
Associate (DP-203)
• Experience in manufacturing industry
• Experience with CI/CD and DevOps practices for analytics platforms (e.g. Git integration,
deployment pipelines, Infrastructure-as-Code)
• Familiarity with SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) and/or SQL Server Reporting
Services (SSRS)
• Familiarity with cost optimization strategies for Azure / Fabric capacities
• Experience working with geographically distributed teams
