ROLE OVERVIEW
We are looking for a skilled and dedicated Composite Technician to join our manufacturing team. The selected candidate will be responsible for executing the complete composite manufacturing process from mould preparation and material layup through resin infusion, prepreg processing, curing, and final finishing. This role requires strong hands-on expertise in composite materials and processes, strict adherence to quality and safety standards, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a high-paced production environment. Prior experience in Indian aerospace, automotive, wind energy, or defence composites manufacturing will be an advantage.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Mould Preparation
- Clean, inspect, and prepare moulds prior to layup; apply release agents, gel coats, and surface films per job specifications
- Perform routine mould maintenance, surface finishing, and dimensional checks to sustain tooling quality
- Handle and store tooling materials in compliance with manufacturing procedures and internal work instructions
Wet Layup
- Execute manual wet layup of glass fibre, carbon fibre, and aramid reinforcements
- Mix resins, hardeners, and catalysts in correct ratios as per technical data sheets (TDS) and process specifications
- Ensure correct fibre orientation, ply sequencing, and laminate quality throughout the layup process
Resin Infusion (VARTM / VARI)
- Set up and carry out Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Moulding (VARTM/VARI) processes
- Install vacuum bagging consumables including peel ply, infusion mesh, spiral wrap, and sealant tape
- Monitor resin flow, vacuum integrity, and infusion progress; identify and resolve dry spots, bridging, or resin starvation
Prepreg Processing
- Handle, cut, and lay up prepreg materials according to approved ply schedules and controlled procedures
- Manage cold storage protocols, maintain material out-life and shelf-life traceability records as per quality requirements
- Perform debulking at specified intervals and prepare accurate vacuum bags for autoclave or oven cure cycles
Curing
- Operate autoclaves, ovens, or heated tooling in accordance with approved cure schedules and process parameters
- Monitor and document cure parameters — temperature ramp rates, pressure, vacuum levels, and hold times
- Perform post-cure demoulding and dimensional inspection of cured composite components
Finishing & Assembly
- Carry out trimming, drilling, and cutting of cured parts using hand tools, pneumatic tools, and CNC routers as applicable
- Perform surface finishing operations like sanding, filling, primer application, and cosmetic defect repair
- Execute secondary bonding and assembly operations using structural adhesives per engineering specifications
- Conduct visual and tactile quality inspections; identify, document, and report non-conformances
Quality, Documentation & Safety
- Maintain accurate production records, job cards, and quality inspection reports as per ISO 9001 / AS 9100 QMS requirements
- Follow all EHS (Environment, Health & Safety) procedures including safe handling of hazardous materials (resins, solvents, fibrous materials) in compliance with Factories Act, 1948 and relevant Indian safety regulations
- Adhere to Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) requirements for all chemicals and composite materials used on the shop floor
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENC
Essential
- 3 – 5 years of hands-on experience in composite manufacturing within aerospace, automotive, wind energy, marine, or defence sectors in India
- Demonstrated proficiency across wet layup, resin infusion (VARTM), prepreg processing, vacuum bagging, curing, and finishing
- Sound knowledge of composite materials: glass fibre, carbon fibre, epoxy, polyester, and vinyl ester resin systems
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, ply layups, and manufacturing work instructions
- Familiarity with autoclave/oven operations and cure cycle monitoring
- Working knowledge of ISO 9001 quality management systems and shop floor documentation practices
Educational Qualifications
- ITI (Industrial Training Institute) certificate in FRP (Fibre Reinforced Plastic) Technology from an NCVT-recognised institution with strong composites shop floor experience
- Diploma in Polymer Technology, Plastics Technology, or Aeronautical Engineering from an SBTE or AICTE-approved polytechnic institution
- Vocational or short-term training certificate in composites manufacturing, FRP fabrication, or advanced polymer processing from any government-recognised or industry-recognised training institution
Desirable
- Prior experience working with organisations such as HAL, DRDO, ISRO, leading OEMs
- Familiarity with AS 9100 quality management standards applicable to aerospace composites in India
- Exposure to Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) methods: tap testing, ultrasonic C-scan, or visual inspection per relevant standards
- Knowledge of DGAQA (Directorate General of Aeronautical Quality Assurance) or CEMILAC quality processes for defence applications
- Experience with carbon fibre components for EV, motorsport, or UAV/drone manufacturing
