A Quality Engineer in plastic manufacturing and packaging development ensures that raw materials, manufacturing processes, and finished packaging products meet stringent safety, structural, and regulatory standards. They act as a bridge between R&D / Quality and production to prevent defects and minimize waste.
Core Responsibilities
1. Quality Assurance & TestingPerform dimensional and structural tests on plastic components and packaging materials (e.g., tensile strength, burst/drop testing, seal integrity, and thickness).Develop and execute validation protocols for new production tooling, molds, and machinery.Establish root-cause analysis protocols using methodologies like 8D, Fishbone (Ishikawa), and 5 Whys when packaging defects occur.
2. Packaging Development SupportCollaborate and product designers to ensure new packaging concepts are manufacturable, cost-effective, and meet sustainability goals.Conduct feasibility and pilot-run studies for new plastic formulations and packaging solutions.
3. Process Control & ComplianceImplement and monitor Statistical Process Control (SPC) to track machinery performance (e.g., in injection molding, blow molding, or extrusion lines).Manage Quality Management Systems (QMS) and ensure all packaging complies with international regulations (e.g., FDA for food/pharma packaging, ISO 9001).4. Supplier Quality ManagementAudit raw material suppliers (resins, masterbatches, additives) and manage Non-Conformance Reports (NCR).Oversee the Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) for packaging components.Key Qualifications & SkillsEducation: Bachelor’s degree in Plastics Engineering, Polymer Science, Mechanical Engineering, or Industrial Engineering.Experience: Typically 3–7 years of experience in plastic extrusion, blow molding, thermoforming, or flexible/rigid packaging.Technical Proficiencies: Familiarity with precision measurement tools (Micrometers, UTM machines, FTIR Spectrometers, Profile Projectors).Quality Methodologies: Six Sigma Green/Black Belt certification, APQP, PPAP, FMEA, and ISO standards.
