Essential Duties And Responsibilities
The
Engineer – Quality Assurance (Metallurgy Lab) is responsible for executing metallurgical and Metrological activities to ensure that the
Tensioner and Idler components meet all customer, product, and process quality requirements.
This role involvesanalysis for regular inward material, New development sample, vehicle validation sample and warranty return parts. Maintaining laboratory standards, ensuring test accuracy and traceability, and supporting product validation and failure investigations. The incumbent ensures compliance with IATF 16949, ISO 17025, and OEM-specific requirements, contributing to the organization’s overall product reliability and quality improvement.
- Metrological and Metallurgical Testing & Inspection
- Collecting the GRN from stores team on shift basis, Collect the samples from the received lot as per global AQL procedure.
- Conduct routine Metrological inspection such as ( CMM, VMC, Roughness tester, Contour Tester and general variable measurement) and Metallurgical Testing such us hardness testing (Vickers, Rockwell, Brinell), Structure analysis, grain size, case depth evaluation and Material confirmation
- Perform chemical composition analysis of raw materials and finished parts as per standard specifications.
- Evaluate heat-treated components for structural conformity, decarburization, and microhardness distribution.
- Inspect surface coatings, plating, and corrosion resistance properties of Tensioner & Idler components.
- Maintain proper sample preparation, testing accuracy, and result documentation as per defined procedures.
- Laboratory Operations
- Support day-to-day operations of the Metallurgy Lab ensuring adherence to testing procedures, calibration schedules, and safety norms.
- Maintain laboratory equipment in operational condition, coordinate periodic calibration, and record maintenance logs.
- Follow international testing standards (ASTM, ISO, SAE, IS) for metallurgical evaluations.
- Ensure that all test results are recorded, traceable, and available for audits and process verification.
- Assist in preparing and maintaining Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and test methods.
- Quality Assurance & Support Activities
- Participate in failure analysis and root cause investigations for internal, supplier, or customer rejections.
- Support PPAP, APQP, and process validation by providing metallurgical data and test results.
- Assist in establishing metallurgical acceptance criteria and inspection standards for new parts.
- Collaborate with production, supplier quality, and design teams to resolve metallurgical concerns.
- Support containment and corrective actions for metallurgical or material-related issues.
- Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain records and reports per IATF 16949 and ISO 17025 requirements.
- Ensure metallurgical lab compliance during internal, customer, or certification audits.
- Prepare metallurgical evaluation summaries, test reports, and trend analyses for management review.
- Maintain compliance with EHS requirements in lab operations.
- Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities for process, material and Cost improvements
- Support Kaizen, Six Sigma, and problem-solving activities to reduce metallurgical rejections.
- Propose improvement projects to enhance testing accuracy, sample throughput, and result turnaround time.

Requirements And Preferred Skills
A bachelor’s degree in automotive, mechanical engineering, with a minimum of 5+ years of relevant professional experience, ideally in a technical or quality role within the automotive industry
- In-depth knowledge of Metrological and metallurgical testing methods – hardness, microstructure, grain size, inclusion rating, and case depth.
- Proficiency in operating metallurgical instruments such as optical microscope, microhardness tester, spectrometer, grinder/polisher, and etching systems.
- Proficiency in operating m Metrological inspection such as ( CMM, VMC, Roughness tester, Contour Tester and general variable measurement
- Familiarity with IATF 16949, ISO 9001, and related documentation practices.
- Knowledge of root cause analysis tools (8D, 5Why, Fishbone) and quality improvement methodologies (APQP, PPAP, FMEA, MSA).
- Basic understanding of Tensioner and Idler manufacturing processes – casting, forging, machining, and assembly.
