A Machinist Level 1 is a skilled professional who uses machines, tools, and knowledge to create precise parts from metals, plastics, and composites for various industries, including manufacturing, aerospace, and defense. They interpret blueprints, sketches to determine the best approach for producing each part. Skills expected include comprehension of construction documents, sourcing the required materials, measuring & cutting materials, part conformance and documentation.
Machinist Level 1 personnel would be expected to operate with supervision utilizing drawing and construction document available. They may work independently or in teams to complete tasks assigned.
Machinists would be expected to understand and anticipate machining and tooling limits and other issues to properly fixture, jig, or sequence the machining process to control or eliminate problems.
Specific Responsibilities include:
- Produce machined parts.
- Move and position raw materials and finished goods by use of pallet jacks, forklifts, and shop cranes. Safely prepare rigging for overhead lifting as directed.
- Prepare parts for machining.
- Operate various drilling, cutting, torches and other tools and equipment to create a wide variety of parts from shop drawings as directed that conform to specifications.
- Determine machine process including teaching of tooling and making off sets in program, layout, clamping, fixturing, tool selection, marking, etc.
- Perform a variety of general shop tasks including grinding, assisting Fabricators, etc.
- Use drawings, specifications, and verbal instructions to assemble structures.
- Record any fabrication documentation or testing results as required.
- Perform light maintenance on equipment.
- Perform regular facilities related operations on buildings, grounds, and/or related facilities as required.
- Support and participate in the organization’s continual improvement program to conform to ISO 9001 and understand the implications of not complying with the quality management system.
- Other duties as assigned.
