Job Title: Emergency Physician / Consultant - Emergency Medicine
Department: Emergency Department (ED) / Casualty
Reports To: Head of Emergency Medicine / Medical Director / Medical Superintendent
Job Summary
The Emergency Physician is responsible for the immediate assessment, resuscitation, stabilization, and initial treatment of patients presenting with acute illnesses, injuries, and life-threatening conditions. Operating in a high-pressure environment, this role requires rapid decision-making, advanced clinical skills, and seamless coordination with various medical and surgical specialties to ensure the highest standard of emergency patient care.
Key Responsibilities
- Triage & Clinical Assessment
- Perform rapid and accurate triage of incoming patients based on the severity of their condition.
- Conduct primary and secondary surveys, prioritizing airway, breathing, and circulation (ABC).
- Order and interpret immediate diagnostic tests (ECG, X-rays, CT scans, point-of-care ultrasounds/FAST, and stat blood work).
- Acute Care & Resuscitation
- Lead the resuscitation team during medical and trauma codes (e.g., cardiac arrest, polytrauma, stroke, acute myocardial infarction, severe sepsis).
- Perform life-saving emergency procedures, including endotracheal intubation, central venous catheterization, chest tube insertion, defibrillation, and lumbar puncture.
- Manage acute pain, hemorrhage, and toxicological emergencies effectively.
- Patient Disposition & Coordination
- Decide on the appropriate disposition of the patient (admission to Ward/ICU, transfer to the operating theater, referral to another facility, or discharge).
- Consult and coordinate with on-call specialists and surgeons for definitive care.
- Facilitate safe patient handovers to the admitting team or intensive care unit.
- Medico-Legal & Documentation
- Ensure meticulous, real-time documentation of patient history, clinical findings, interventions, and treatment plans in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
- Handle Medico-Legal Cases (MLC) strictly according to local laws and hospital protocols, ensuring proper forensic documentation and police intimation when necessary.
- Leadership & Quality Improvement
- Supervise, guide, and mentor junior medical officers, interns, and emergency nursing staff.
- Actively participate in departmental mortality and morbidity (M&M) meetings, clinical audits, and quality assurance programs.
- Ensure compliance with hospital infection control and safety protocols within the ED.
Qualifications & Requirements - Basic Education: Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from a recognized medical university.
- Specialized Qualification: * DEM: Diploma in Emergency Medicine, OR
- MRCEM: Membership of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine .
- Licensure: Valid and active registration with the State or National Medical Council.
- Certifications: Must hold current, valid certifications in BLS (Basic Life Support), ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support), and preferably ATLS (Advanced Trauma Life Support) and PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support).
- Experience: Typically requires 2 to 5 years of post-MBBS experience, with a significant portion spent actively working in a high-volume emergency or casualty department.
