Primary Design Engineer – Power Distribution

About the Role
We are looking for an experienced Primary Design Engineer with expertise in the UK Power Distribution sector. In this role, you'll design and deliver primary electrical infrastructure projects up to 400kV, supporting leading UK DNO/IDNO/ICP clients while ensuring compliance with UK engineering standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Design primary substations and electrical networks (up to 400kV)
- Prepare Single Line Diagrams (SLDs), General Arrangement (GA) drawings, equipment layouts, earthing designs, and cable routing layouts
- Perform primary plant design calculations, including earthing studies, equipment sizing, busbar design, and insulation coordination
- Ensure compliance with UK DNO/IDNO standards, ENA, IEC, and relevant engineering practices
- Coordinate with Protection & Control, Civil, and Planning teams
- Participate in design reviews and quality assurance
- Liaise with clients, contractors, and internal stakeholders
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers
Required Skills
- Strong understanding of UK power distribution standards and specifications
- Experience with DNO/IDNO/ICP projects (UKPN, SSEN, etc.)
- Knowledge of substations, transformers, switchgear, CTs/VTs, and earthing systems
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and design software such as ETAP, ELEK, or CDEGS
- Familiarity with ENA Engineering Recommendations, IEC, and BS Standards
- Strong communication, documentation, and problem-solving skills
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
- 5–7 years of experience in a UK utility or consultancy environment
- Experience working on UKPN, SSEN, or other DNO frameworks
- Exposure to IDNO/ICP connection projects
- Site support, commissioning, or construction interface experience is an advantage
