Kennel Assistant
Part-Time - $14.36 per hour
 
Effingham County is seeking a part-time Kennel Assistant to support daily operations at the Animal Shelter. This position plays a direct role in the care and well-being of animals in the shelter, while also assisting the public with adoptions, animal care education, and related services. The role requires someone who is dependable, compassionate, physically capable, and comfortable working in a fast-paced shelter environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with daily kennel operations and care of shelter animals
  • Process incoming animals and monitor for signs of illness, injury, or special care needs
  • Clean and maintain kennel areas, shelter equipment, and supplies
  • Help reunite lost animals with owners and support adoption activities
  • Educate the public on adoptions, rabies management, nuisance animals, and related animal welfare topics
  • Prepare and process adoption paperwork in accordance with County and State requirements
  • Accept fees, issue receipts, and assist with deposits
  • Communicate with veterinarians and rescue groups regarding adoptable animals and required vaccinations or spay/neuter verification
  • Report animal bites to the appropriate health agencies and ensure compliance with Georgia law
  • Answer phones, assist citizens, and route complaints to the proper personnel
  • Maintain records, forms, reports, and other documentation
  • Attend meetings and perform other related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Veterinary assistance training, college coursework, or vocational training is preferred
  • One year of experience handling animals or a combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge and skills
  • Valid Georgia driver’s license required

Work Environment and Physical Requirements
This position involves active, hands-on work in a shelter environment and may require lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling animals and materials. Work may involve exposure to noise, odors, wet or dirty conditions, disease, and outdoor weather conditions.
