An Environmentalist is a person who advocates and takes necessary steps for the protection of our environment and mother nature. An environmentalist stands as a supporter for the environment movement which is, “a political and ethical movement that seeks to improve and protect the quality of the natural environment through changes to environmentally harmful human activities”.

Whereas an Environmental Scientist is someone who is determined to do research, analysis and data collection for both biotic and abiotic factors of the environment and dig out solutions for the factors causing hazardous to the environment.

What does an Environmentalist do?

Environmentalists generally make efforts and contribute towards the conservation of nature and natural resources which are on the verge of extinction. Their main role also includes promoting the message of preservation and conservation.

An Environmental Scientist conducts field work and investigates the factors causing harm to mother nature. They develop plans and techniques that can prevent or fix environmental issues. They plan research, developmental programs and technical support services in connection to air, water, soil, mining, federal facilities, biology and other environmental subjects.

How to become an Environmentalist?

To become an Environmentalist one has to pursue her studies in subjects such as Environmental Studies, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Ecology etc. Taking Life Science during the higher degree would be a great choice. In order to start her career in this field she must take science as her stream right from high school. And followed by a bachelor’s degree in such relevant subjects. The next step would be doing a specialisation and a PhD in any environment specific subject / field.

During her education period she can also join some NGOs or associate herself with organisations that work for the cause such as ‘save the environment, water, pollution, etc’. This will bring on the real life experience on her table and will help her get good exposure.

What is the eligibility criteria to enter the field of Environmental Science or to become an environmentalist?

The basic eligibility criteria to enter in this field is to have a science background. To enter in the undergraduate course one has to take subjects like Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Environmental Studies etc compulsorily in their 10+2 with minimum 65% marks in their 12th std.

For Postgraduate courses the basic eligibility is BSc in Environmental studies or any such relevant subjects with minimum 60% aggregate. For getting admission in a MTech course the candidate must qualify the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) examination.

Candidates who successfully clear exams like GATE, NET-JRF, CSIR etc become easily eligible for taking admission in MPhil or PhD course.
