The Indian subcontinent is protected by its four military forces: the Indian Army, the Indian Navy, the Indian Air Force, and the Indian Coast Guard. The Indian Armed Forces are also supported by the Paramilitary forces.

The supreme commander of the Armed Forces is the President of India. It comes under the Ministry of Defence (MoD) of the Government of India.

India has the world’s second-largest military force and it stands as the fourth most powerful military force. It is one of the most prestigious and respected services that students can engage in, and serve the country. It is also a very high paying career option with numerous perks and benefits.

What are the four types of Armed Forces?

• The Indian Army
  
  

It offers both permanent and short-service commissions. A Permanent Commission (PC) is a permanent post in the Army till you retire. A Short-Service Commission (SSC) is only for a period of 5 years after which you can either opt for PC or get an extension of another 5 years.

• The Indian Navy
  
  

It offers a wide range of options such as the Executive Branch, Engineering Branch, Educational Branch, Electrical Branch, and Life at Sea.

• The Indian Air Force
  
  

The recruitment process is mainly done through the UPSC exams. It can be broadly categorised into the Flying Branch, the Technical Branch, and the Ground Duty Branch.

• The Indian Coast Guard

What to expect from a career in the Armed Forces?

Youngsters look forward to an exciting and engaging career after completing their studies. Apart from a high paying job, one aspires to have total job satisfaction. A career in the armed forces provides just that. It is a known fact that a person in the armed forces, be it the Army, the Navy or the Air Force, receives a number of perks and benefits.

What is the educational criteria to join the various Armed Forces?

The Indian Army

• Soldier (General Duty) - 10th Class/Matric Pass with minimum 45% as aggregate and 33% in each subject. Age should be between 17.5 - 21 years
• Soldier (Technical) - 10+2/Intermediate Exam pass in Science (Physics, Chemistry, Maths and English) with minimum 50% marks in aggregate and minimum 40% marks in each subject. Age should be between 17.5 - 23 years.

Four Ways To Get Into The IMA Are

• Direct Entry - Pass the Combined Defence Services Exam (CDSE) in your final year of graduation
• Tech Entry - After your 10+2 exam (Grade 12)
• University Entry - For students in the final year of Engineering
• Technical Graduate Course - For students who have completed their BE / BTech in notified streams.

• National Defence Academy (NDA), Pune
  
  

Students can take the NDA exam after class XI, clear the UPSC exam and the 5-day Services Selection Board (SSB) interview. Once you pass the medical test you are in the NDA.

• Officers Training Academy (OTA)
  
  

The Officers Training Academy trains officers for the Short Service Commission (SSC). Four ways to get into the OTA are

• Men and women can join through CDSE for non-technical branches.
• Tech graduates can join through SSC-Tech Entries.
• Law graduates with degrees in LLB/LLM with 50% aggregate can join via the NCC Special Entry Scheme.
• Law graduates with LLB/LLM with 55% marks and registered with the Bar Council of India/State are eligible.

The Indian Navy

• The Indian Naval Academy B Tech Course under the aegis of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi
  
  

Candidates can apply after 10+2 exams with physics, Chemistry and mathematics as their electives. Admission happens via the UPSC (twice a year) followed by a 5-day Service Selection Board (SSC) interview

• Naval Orientation Course (NOC)
  
  

The Indian Naval Academy has designed the NOC to orient selected cadets (who are graduates) towards the Navy. Upon clearing the SSB, the trainee undergoes a 22 week training as an officer cadet.

• Naval orientation Course (Ext)
  
  

The Indian Naval Academy has designed this course to orient cadets towards the executive branch of the Navy. She/he is recruited after clearing the SSB and spends a year in the academy.

The Indian Air Force

The National Defence Academy (NDA)

Students who have taken Physics and Mathematics in 10+2, can take the NDA exam. Final year students are also eligible to apply.

The entry through NDA is open for the FLying Branch, Ground Duty both rech and non-tech. Cadets of the Flying Branch and Tech Ground Duty will be offered B.Tech where as non-tech Ground Duty cadets will be offered B.Sc. Degree.
